Golf Random Irritations

My course has mandated "hedgehog wheels". (Powakaddy lattice style ones are also allowed).

My course is pretty flat, so there's little danger of wheel spinning.
Meanwhile the hedgehog wheels put holes all over the place which just makes the mud easier to churn up.
I am becoming increasingly convinced that hedgehog wheels cause more damage to the course than normal wheels.

(I carry in winter, BTW).
Agree the hedgehog wheels put little indentations in the mud which holds water .
It makes it worse imo.

Have to say I bloody hate it when the ropes come out. Totally understand they’re necessary and always abide by them, but it gets so annoying when your ball ends up in the worst possible place and you have to take the long route around, take 2-3 clubs with you, trying to keep grips dry when they’ve been on the ground etc. If it gets to the point where most greens are roped off, I’ll dump the trolley and start carrying a reduced set instead.

We have been on hedgehog wheels for coming up to 10 years and we have seen no damage to the course because of them

I'm in favour of progress, but if your course has remained open through winter for decades (maybe more than a century), is it really necessary?

Troubles with that comment.

When first joined this club there were less than 400 members, a lot of them did not play in winter, a lot carried and very few had an electric trolley. When I first went to a buggy 30years ago I was one of only 5 who had one and only one of those had a full size two seater buggy and there were no hire buggies to hire. Trolleys were even banned in winter

These days we have over 800 members, there are around 40 members with their own buggy and we have a fleet of about 15 buggies to hire. The majority who walk have an electric trolley amd relatively few no longer play in winter with the availability of much better waterproof clothing.

Wear to the course in winter is so much more obvious compared to even a decade ago.

Totally agree, and that's the main reason I start carrying as soon as the ropes come out rather than waiting for the official trolley bans. Can't stand carrying 3 clubs over and having to leave 2 of them sat in the mud for a minute!

I would agree with hedge hog wheels being worse the standard wheels for course damage

as well as creating really poor lies when a ball comes to rest in a hole made by one.

Just take a towel with you and place them on the towel 🤷‍♂️

When I first went to England I had a trolley.....with a big bag.....soon had a carry bag, used to play Open's every weekend in summer, 36 holes Saturday and Sunday, now back in OZ I use a cart most times, as do most people my age and even younger.

Club's make more money from hiring out cart's, it is the way golf is going over here.

We are lucky to have good weather 11 month's of the year minimum, very rare for cart's to be banned.

Put a tee peg in the ground and rest the grip of the club you’re not using on it.

I do this a lot when taking a wedge and putter close to the green

Pop a tee in the ground and rest the butt of the club on it! I’ve done this for as long as I can remember

Effort. Much easier just walk there with your bag and plonk it down. 🤷‍♂️
