Golf Random Irritations

Our greens are desperate for water but because of low overnight temperatures they are not being irrigated. Elsewhere we are in the same boat as you - the lack of growth is causing real issues, especially around the greens where the grass is very patchy. We effectively now have winter lies there but with hard pan rather than wet mud.

And with no rain forecast for the next week it’s not going to improve.

It’s not the ideal time for so little rain when we still have the cold easterly winds 😫

No rain for a month has seen our fairways go from soggy to bone hard
Were now playing midsummer conditions on fairways that haven't really started growing yet.
Patches of hard pan surrounded by patches of thin grass...
Your strike has to be spot on to get any sort of flight and then on landing you take your chances with the bounce and run...
Not a lot we can do about it but it makes the game irritating right now...and the bloody wind is from the worst direction....
When did you join my club?

Same here! Glorious weather but so many bad lies around greens particularly where it's been muddy and dried out, but no grass to speak of.

My first membership at a golf club involved them requiring me to wear what I played golf in. The interview was held over 18 holes of golf with one of the club committee members.
Sounds like a sensible interview if it was to join a golf club and there was limited availability.

Despite the glorious weather and the removal of mats, I have a few gripes. April has seen the introduction of increased subs plus food and beer prices going up. An email this week confirmed the price of comps was also increasing. We previously paid £2 for the comp and £1 for the 2’s. Now we will pay £3 for the comp and £2 for the 2’s. No explanation for the increase, which only applies to weekend comps.

We have replaced the caterer. The previous one produced excellent food, but apparently rubbed some of the committee up the wrong way. Yesterday a small group of us went for a few pints and food with our wives. We were planning on going for an Indian but opted to stay in the clubhouse and try the new menu. All 8 of us were really disappointed. Quality and consistency were below par. Two ordered the same meal which looked/tasted different to each other. The chef/owner didn’t come out to discuss/explain/apologise after receiving some feedback and semi-eaten meals, despite it being quiet. Fingers crossed it’s teething issues. Having a place to enjoy a beer and some nice food is a big part of the membership experience.

Played 9 on my own yesterday evening. Our 4th hole is a long par 4 and the pin was pushed right to the back.

As I approached the green there was a pile of pitch marks right at the front of the green.

It was firm enough yesterday so plenty would be pitching and running up towards the pin.

It annoys me that people ignore that they pitch miles away from where the ball finishes and don't fix it.

It also annoys me that many many players came through and made no attempt to repair this obvious bombardment. Even if someone repaired a couple that they didn't make. It wouldn't take long for the damage to be completed fixed.

Slow players-

Why is always another persons fault and not theirs when you discuss it with them?

Same group, last week hour and half behind the first group this week over an hour.

One was blaming it on the group in front, I was in the group in front and we finished nearly 3 holes ahead of them.

People with trolleys (and seniors) are the main culprits. 🤣

My club has bought new pins for the season. Normally something to rejoice but they have decided to go for pins better suite to javelin throwing or clubbing someone over the head. They are so thick and heavy it's ridiculous. I tend to putt with the flag in but even I can see that the chances of a bounce out are bigger with these ☹️

That’s interesting because we used to have them and I preferred them . We have gone to the light ones with thin bottom

Seen more bounce outs from the light ones than the hearty ones

One of ours went from free to £40 but the green fee is still £100+ so a good deal
The course closest to me is still free for reciprocals. Which....because we get knocked off the course a LOT during the coming good months would be a deal breaker for me if I then had to go to another course and pay (anything) to play. It must be a money maker for the club, but if I can't play on my own course once a week.....that's a big no-no for me. The further course that now requires a payment doesn't have so many events going on so it's not such a big deal to me.

I've played at lots of clubs with the tapered bottom pins and the only way you get a bounce out with them is if you have walloped the ball. With the thicker one, they fill so much of the hole, it doesn't take much for the ball to hit and stay up. If I am putting first I always leave the pin in. I am less likely to do that with these.
