Golf Random Irritations

If a club isn’t “actively” looking for membership then I guess there will be little need to market membership

If a club needs members and green fees etc then it’s prob all over the website

All depends on the club that someone is looking at

Yeah that could be one motive to not publish. Although I’d expect clubs in that position to say “membership is currently full etc etc”, it’s a nice positive message to get out there and leaves potential members in no doubt why a price isn't being advertised

Could be a case of these clubs saying "If you have to ask, you can't afford it"
Not sure that really applies these days.
I could actually "afford it" but couldn't justify it, maybe some will see that as the same thing.

It shouldn’t take much to figure out the levels of fees at certain clubs

Most don’t publish them to save having to update every year
Not sure without my crystal ball how I would know what the fees are.

Obviously it's a great facility with 3 courses so it's not going to be £1500, but they're going to be telling you anyway shortly into the conversation so why not just add the prices to stop wasting people's time 🤷‍♂️

Up to them obviously and if it works then no issues, just personally find it a bit silly for a club that has a section inviting you to apply for membership and complete a form. If it was Sunningdale, Wentworth etc then obviously that's different.

Because then they don’t have to keep updating the website. Most golf clubs are run by a small team with low expertise in website management. Golf clubs have some of the worst websites I’ve ever seen.

This.

Given that you can get a professional but simple website built (which is exactly what you want and need) for less than the price of a single member's annual subscription, then simple updates are no harder than writing an Email, it is hilarious how bad many of them are. In some cases we're talking organisations with 7 figure turnovers, that have a website worse than a local cake decorator or cleaner.

More seriously, the hugely out-of-date, vague and absent info on things such as lessons/coaching, especially for juniors and those new to golf, is probably hampering the health of the game generally. It's 2025 - if you have to phone up to find out any sort of up-to-date information then that's not going to impress anyone and some will be put off or worried about asking silly questions if they have little prior knowledge. Mind you, some memberships do seem to want to run their clubs in a way that keeps it the entirely exclusive preserve of existing elderly regulars.

I guess because they want to speak to you 🤷‍♂️ to interact with people that are interested in joining the club , to have human interaction to see what deals etc etc

Spot on

If they can't update one page on a website, once a year........that's pretty poor. It really is not that hard and gives a very poor impression.
I find it difficult to accept membership prices are missing due to time pressures of carrying out annual/seasonal edit/update. Are there other businesses/membership clubs where folks would accept that level of unmaintained websites

I'm surprised at you both. I expected more realism / cynicism from you guys.

A business that plans and manages demand through the use of a ball chute is unlikely to be able to maintain a website.

All of which would be a complete waste of time once the price is revealed.

A lot of the second bit is normally done by the Pro as a opposed to the club itself

Health of the game right now is very good though , plenty of clubs are healthy

It’s always worth remembering a lot of the clubs are members run , volunteers etc so not everything will suit everyone and it will be what suits the clubs

Most clubs now have very good websites - it’s more a minority now that will have websites that aren’t done by either IG or Golfworking etc

Agreed that there are certainly also plenty of good website examples to copy for the ones that do need a rebuild. As ever, the ones that serve their function the best are usually not the flashiest or most complex, either.

We recently revamped ours using IG , added and update pictures And layout

Not sure what difference it has made in terms of enquiries-

But if a club website hasn't got a course guide with the pro telling me that "long and straight of the tee is best" on at least 3 holes, then I just don't want to go and play there! :ROFLMAO:

Playing tomorrow and still not sure how many layers to wear as the weather forecast seems to be all over the place at the moment. Will probably end up with too many on and end up lugging round a bagful of discarded tops 🥵

Played today and one layer was one too many 😎

I tend to wear multiple thin layers, then you can easily get the balance right by taking one or two off, and they don't take up much room in the bag.

So do I but I really don’t want to be subjecting my playing partners to the sight of me (17 stone) walking around in just my base layer.

Or worse still, stripping off to remove my base layer 😱

Ah that's a fair point - I had that issue a couple of weeks back. Down to baselayer + polo and you can't go any further. I guess, if in doubt, forgo the baselayer and add a gilet or something. :)
