The distance drop-off I get with my short irons on an off-centre strike.
On or around the middle - no problem....dropped an 8 iron to 4 feet from 140 yards yesterday....
A few holes later and the same club struggled to 115 on a poor but not disastrous strike.
Don't get me wrong, I know I'm going to get a drop-off but more than 10 yards or so is no good to anyone..especially from 140 yards.
9 and Wedge are the same...but the 7 and 6 only drop 10-12 on a poor shot.
I have Mizuno Pro 223s and, up to 7 iron, they have a slot in the head to help flexing the face and they're made from Chromoly
From 8-W they're pretty much blades......and similarly unforgiving on certain strikes....
Love the clubs but this inconsistency is doing my head in......
Isn't this always the trade-off though? You could get something more forgiving but you good players normally moan about getting flyers out of the middle. A tale as old as time...The distance drop-off I get with my short irons on an off-centre strike.

My beef is the 25 yard drop-off in the 8-W but only 10-15 on the 6 and 7.Isn't this always the trade-off though? You could get something more forgiving but you good players normally moan about getting flyers out of the middle. A tale as old as time...
Sounds like you just need to do a new iron fitting. Just make sure you turn up on a bad striking day.My beef is the 25 yard drop-off in the 8-W but only 10-15 on the 6 and 7.
The short irons have a middle and nothing else
Interestingly, another magazine did some tests on irons in the same category and the drop-off average was about 8-12 yards....the 223s were 18.
Sadly, which club do you normally have available to be fitted with.....Sounds like you just need to do a new iron fitting. Just make sure you turn up on a bad striking day.
Interesting, I didn't think of that. I wonder if somewhere would do it with a shorter club if you requested in advance. Sounds like you need an iron that's slightly more forgiving anyway though.Sadly, which club do you normally have available to be fitted with.....
Yup..a 7 iron.....
I think I do these days....Interesting, I didn't think of that. I wonder if somewhere would do it with a shorter club if you requested in advance. Sounds like you need an iron that's slightly more forgiving anyway though.
I've only ever done it with 7, and I suppose the assumption is if you can hit the 7 nicely then the shorter ones are a given. But when people are getting blended sets they would have to try the longer ones and the shorter ones anyway. So it must be an option in some places.I think I do these days....
Fitting club used to be a 6 iron until lofts started to creep and it's now a 7
I'd like access to a 5, 7 and 9 because head construction can change dramatically and what suits in a 5 might not in a 9

The Mizuno guy I use in Tring only has 7 irons available so if you want to blend, say, 923 forged and HMP then you hit a 7 in both and the computer does the rest..I've only ever done it with 7, and I suppose the assumption is if you can hit the 7 nicely then the shorter ones are a given. Personally probably not but the principle is the sameWould you consider the HMP? Ive just got them, nowhere near as good as you but the fitter said for me they would suit due to the ground interaction I get. Anyways reading the reviews they say they are great for single digit golfers like yourself looking for forgiveness

I'd be looking 243s and 245s or 923F
Hollow body, slots,, cast, proper forged, forged faces etc etc...all different
It'll come in the Spring but I doubt I'll be buying new these days....Wonder if you give it 6 months if the 925 will release the forged version, I mean the 923 did after a few months
