I’ve no dream car really although a new TT would do the job.

My cars a VW passat TDI….Had three so far, solid as a rock, 45 plus MPG, low road tax, massive boot that takes two sets of clubs easy and it’s doing less that 3000 revs at 90 MPH….Oops sorry, scrub that, 2000 revs at 70 MPH.

I have a Seat Altea diesel. It returns 46 mpg+, slightly small boot but it does the jobby and never had one bill or ounce of trouble touch wood!!!!!!! It drives very nicely, slightly plasticy inside but easily cleaned (so practical!!!!) Would buy another Seat no problem.

At £1.10 a litre my next choice could be back to a Kawasaki Ninja or a nice shiney new Duccati (mmmmmmmmm!!!)with a baby seat strapped onto it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dream car, I've no idea, only look at what I can afford although some of the Mercs that pass me get a second glance. Not really a car man atall.

eaglehunter, avoid the old 3-series B-M-Trouble-You like you would a nasty std. They drive crap, drink fuel, break down and are very spartan.

What years would that be mwj? mines a 2001. Mine's been as good as gold other than a) air mass sensor and b) filling it up with unleaded the other week!!!

As an ex member of the Toyota Enthusiasts club, I would say they are remarkable, but I couldn't comment on new models (anything after 1990). I would have a Celica but at only 11 bhp more and 1/2 tonne heavier than my Puma, I'll not bother!

Your safe dave with a 2001 3-series.

Anything square shaped from a J-Plate upto the newer shape (yours) is awful mate.

As for Toyotas, I had a 1986 wedge shaped Celica GT a 10 years ago, I loved it. Also had a MK I MR2.

I know where there is a 1989 Supra 3.0Turbo Auto in white with leather, just over 100k, 1 mature gentleman owner and Full toyota history for just £1500 which is so cheap I could be tempted if I fancied a toy.

I'd heard a few scare stories about the mid 90s models too.

1986 Celica - that would be the last of the RWD (carb) models or the early 2.0 GT 162 16v FWD? I had a 1988 GT, cracking car 150 bhp, very good driver for FWD. There was a convertible which was a disaster by all accounts. I had an MR2 and a Corolla gti, both had the same engine, great!

The "old" (but not original) supra you refer to is a long lasting and mostly reliable beast best sampled in turbo/auto. The head gasket goes inevitably and there are too many expensive items to replace (like the mazda rx7)
which deters many folk.

I found a 1.3 corolla for a friend (N reg) years ago which has just clocked 250,000.....only needed a clutch and exhaust bits/tyres up 'till now. Incredible.

My celica Dave, was the FWD 2.0GT, it was tuned extensively with a polished & ported gas-flowed head with metal headgasket, custom made air-intake (did it myself) that fitted under the front splitter so the car sucked in huge amounts of air, race-spec kent cams, lightweight vernier pulleys & lightened and balanced bottom end & flywheel.

In addition it ran on barely legal as close to race tyres as you can get, had the comp spec front & rear suspension, Competition spec brakes front and rear & stiffer strut-brace on the front.

On the rolling road this car punched out 197bhp at the flywheel.

This car was my baby, I was privilegded to own such a car when I was only 19 and wish I still had it today. If I see another "wedgie" celica that is decent I will snap it up.

Calm down mwj!! thank goodness it was the ST162. I had to cobble up some air intake pipes to fit a K&N...sounded great. The only thing I remember was the guys in the club all trying to bypass the VIS induction. The car was a bit sluggish, then ker-pow at 4,600 a rocket ship!!!
The Puma has a variable cam-timing (a la honda??) which is much better. Interesting to note (oh my, here comes the anorak!) that yamaha developed the head on both the 3S-GE celica engine for toyota and the 1.7 zetec for Ford.....strange that these two are my favourite nippy runabouts!!!

I loved the VIS, my favourite trick was holding out in 2nd gear at 4500rpm next to some rude boys in a corsa/nova, waving at them then nailing it.

On the redline (6900rpm in mine due to mods) it was good for 95mph in 3rd. Top speed was 155mph on the rev limiter which I achieved on a proving ground.

The air intake in made was 8 inches wide, funnelling into a 4-inch pipe which was in turn joined to the air-box which had a regular air filter in.

That 1.7 ford engine is a gem, had a Ford Racing Puma at work and that was a beauty.

When i was in dubai, we visited the ferrari, lambo and mercedes show rooms. Then to 'Exotic car sales' and there was about 100 million pounds worth of cars in 1 room. The porsche cayenne is as common as the corsa over here. It was like living in the stigs dream. Every other car was an f430 or mclaren slr or even murcialargos.
