GCW/Getonwithitgolf on social media are having a proper rant aimed at GM and their counterparts as well as golf clubs in regards slow play etc - some out of order stuff been said but some makes a lot of sense

Some fair points in there, however, I still can't see anything happening. I can't imagine a lot of the more senior generation at my place be willing to take a handset out with them so they can be tracked!

Im pretty sick of reading about slow play and I believe its been in every GM and other mags for months now.

So do something about it then or stop the bloody whining.

Some great points, i'd like to see time activated claymores, if the sensors by the green don't pick you up within 10 mins of tee off then the mines go off leaving the next group space to play through

After the shennanigans last weekend where a fella threatened to knock someone out because he dared ask them to speed up, I'm all for it.

Group two in front of us had lost 2 holes by the 6th, on the 8th I was talking to one of those in front of us who said he'd asked them to speed up a bit, he got told to stfu or he'd knock him out. Best bit was there was a pro footballer (no names shall be mentioned) in the group holding everyone up, he was doing the old "get laser out, spend a minute measuring, then top it 30 yards"
The footballer wasn't the one doing the threatening btw, that was a fella my regular pp knows.

I think there were some good points in the article. The current approach is not working so why not try something different and shake up the establishment a bit

What a load of absolute dross. Why is up to GM or Todays Golfer to solve the problem of slow play? These are golf publications printing articles on the game for fans of the game. They report the stories. They highlight slow play because its an issue. They can't solve the problem. Neither is it up to the clubs to resolve this. "Good luck persuading the old guard"? Do they think the "old guard" have a secret plan to slow down golf?
The truth is, its up to no-one else other than you and me. The people who play the game. Its not about playing fast or slow, its about consideration to others and keeping up with the game in front. That's it. Simples. No social media nonsense, no condor (whatever that is). Are we seriously expecting a social media campaign to solve the problem? Is someone actually going to make a living supplying trackers for golfers so they can be policed around the course on their "rare days off"? Well actually they might, if people take this condor advert in disguise seriously.
There. Rant over. Yet I managed my rant without a single swear word. Amazing.

Not impressed. Sounded too much like a spotty teenager trying a bit of bullying. As for being tracked around the course, a bit big brother. I'd be leaving it by the first tee, "sorry it fell off."

Part of the problem is that everyone wants to play at similar times...
You rarely hear about slow play on a Sunday afternoon..
It's not the answer, but if you know it's going to be busy Day/Sun mornings, try to play PM - OK, doesn't work well in the Winter or for comps.
Do we need more courses in areas where existing ones are stacked..?
You also have a finite area of play and potentially more players than that area can cope with - and we all play at different speeds.
If you're in a group that is one hole ahead of the group behind, say a 10 minute gap, it only takes a couple of ball searches and a reload on the tee and you're, all of a sudden, holding up the group behind...that's Golf...
All it needs is people to be aware of the proximity of other groups and to let through groups that are being held up. But if there's nowhere to go, is there a point..? If every hole has a group on the green, one on the fairway and one on the tee, it's gonna be slow - the problem lies with the club letting too many people on, as well as there being a mix of numbers and abilities.. If a 4 ball is going to take 3 3/4-4 hours and you have 15 4 balls in front of a 3 ball, that 3 ball is going to take 4 hours + no matter how fast they want to play, even if they get let through on every hole...is that slow or just keeping to the pace of play on the day..?
Golf is not a fast sport.
It doesn't need to be slow but there are plenty of reasons why it can take longer than you want it too..

Pretty much agree with this....its up to the golfers to change and most people don't change until they can see whats in it for them. Its about consideration for others which sadly has gone awol. The art of letting people through has long gone and particularly if you are a single golfer.

What irritates me is not the fact that some one is playing poorly it's about having to wait for somebody to play poorly. People tend to spend ages looking for their ball or waiting for greens to clear which is another 40 yards further that the drive he just hit.....

We have a pretty mixed culture down here and the worse offenders are those who's nations have just recently taken to the game....so they've passed go without picking up the etiquette hand book.

We have elapsed times on the buggies and we do get messaged if we are running late...but everybody pretty much ignores it. I have resorted to complaining to course marshals and when I've done this the group who is holding everyone up gets asked to skip the hole or holes they are behind and re join behind the group in front of them....not ideal but it does work occasionally.

But you immediately get the "he's only hit his drive 200 and then green's still 230 away - he can't hit it that far" but you don't know that.
Also, shorter par 5s...reachable in 2 but you have to wait for the green to clear ..

My previous club had 10 min intervals, and virtually no slow play. Yes, there are some players that need educating, but the club's also have a responsibility...... Aaaaarrrrgggghhh! I wasn't going to post on yet another slow play thread. Waste of energy.

Having watched them on the previous three or four holes I think you get to know if they can reach or not....

Its right and proper to wait for a green to clear if you can reach or even get to within 20 or 30 yards....But if there is 280 to go and you've just hit it 250 with the driver its unlikely you'll get close with a three wood.

The Clubs are between a rock and a hard place..
They need the income but if they sanction slow golfers with competition bans etc, they run the risk of losing those players and the income they provide.
These players can easily go down the road and play somewhere else. And who's to say the new members who replace them will play faster..?

It comes down to education.
People need to be properly informed when they begin playing.
But having to sit through rules and etiquette "lessons" is, apparently, a turn off for new players.....
If you don't educate the new, they will copy the old, if you dont educate the old then the cycle revolves.

Am I the only person getting pee'd off with this constant " slow play " stuff. It takes just shy of 4 hours to play a 3 ball comp at my place and the same for a 4bbb. We rarely experience 5 hour rounds but there are always some who want to run round!

If you don't have time to play at a steady pace and have to get round quickly to get home that's your problem, not mine, don't expect the other players in front to jog between shots just so you can keep HID happy or spend longer at the bar!

Agreed....I have a work colleague who has just taken up thje game and never been on a course before. I took him down the our Par 3 with the express purpose of talking to him about etiquette and behaviour on the course and told him that. We was very happy to learn

I told him about honour from the tee, furthest ball plays first, standing on peoples putting lines etc etc and said that no body minds that he is a beginner and plays poor shots...what they do mind is waiting for him to play poor shots which he got immediately so hopefully he has learnt something and again hopefully he doesn't get into a crowd of Philistines and go native on me....just my insignificant contribution to slow play....
