The CAA would disagree. Inverness let you drop off and pick up , first 10 mins is free. We had to implement a 40 mt exclusion zone. Nothing to do with a money making scheme . you been living in a cave for the last few years ??

a bit late now for Tashy but for future referance should anyone be picking up at Gatwick.
the best way is to phone the person to be picked up and get them to meet you at the drop off point,the south terminal get them to stand opposite the hilton hotel entrance ,the north get them to stand opposite the premier inn entrance.
as for your self ,PARK IN THE LONG STAY CARPARK AT EITHER TERMINAL ,IT IS FREE FOR TWO HOURS . just get them to phone you back when they get to the arranged meeting place ,it take all of two minutes to get to them from the long stay carpark.
i do this all the time as i am a taxi driver in the local area.and im betting i will be doing it at least twice today if not more.

I assume thats aimed at me? No haven't been living in a cave, i have however been visiting the local airports almost daily for the last ten years or so. When something has been free, to suddenly start charging for it is nothing to do with security! If it was why hasn't heathrow and gatwick, arguably the two biggest terrorist targets in the country, brought in the charges ?
they have different security set up i believe. have you heard of the Glasgow Airport attack some years ago the implementation were brought in due to that at regional airport.
Anyway i was explaining to one of the other posters that's from the states who didn't understand why you could not drop off at the front door of many UK Airports
but what do i know i only work for an Airport Authority:rofl:

That explains the changes @ Southampton they've made it buses only right outside the terminal so that's good info, but doesn't explain the £3 charge @ bournemouth. You never could pull right up to the terminal there, but it used to be free. Now it's £3. The price of freedom?

i suppose its about making the most of your assets. Most AA have had massive budget cuts and have to look at ways of raising money. Some are also privately owned and its just market forces.
