Such a pity that the Xbox has been so badly outsold by Sony this generation as it is a far better piece of kit (I have both). it is very solidly built, better designed, quieter, has easy to expand storage, has the resume game function, has Game Pass etc but was still outsold. The PS5 by comparison is a bit clunky to use, feels cheap and plasticy, it is pretty huge and ugly but may have the better controller.

I really do prefer the Xbox controller with the different thumb stick positions 👌

So, probably stupidly, I caved and we've purchased an OLED Switch as a "family christmas gift". I know the new one is due out next year at some point - but my lad (7 on Christmas Day) is desperate to have one and play all of the Lego games - so this will do us for a few years until the Switch 2 OLED equivalent comes out.

As a bonus, I get to use it and play through the old N64 games (Perfect Dark, Zelda etc) as well as the most recent Mario and Zelda Switch releases.

Lovely job.

Will need to upgrade my PS4 for a PS5 for the release of GTA6, but that's a way off yet.

That is a pretty good move. Will be a while before the 2 comes out still and it is going to play current switch games so they will still work.

I got a switch for my eldest for her bday. Couldn't resist when my mate was selling his for £200 as his daughter wasn't using it. Loads of games etc

She doesn't use that much but we play together now and again.

Unfortunately the twins want to do 4 player mario kart then get bored

They need to learn do 2 player and take in turns rather than walking off mid race

I am looking at getting a monitor to run my PS5 and Series X off and it seems a better option than buying a TV (the room they are going in is not one I would watch TV in). I know I do not need anything too flashy as the the consoles only have a 120hz refresh rate and are not going to get any benefit from me buying one that you would buy for a top end PC.

Any recommendations. Also recommendations for speakers to plug in would be appreciated.

I bought a 32” BenQ monitor a couple of years ago for my PS5, very happy with it but I do have HDR disabled as it looks a bit washed out. I did look for a cheap tv but you can’t seem to buy them that small anymore, I couldn’t find one anyway. My speakers are just cheap pebble things, ok for basic stuff but I use a headset for gaming just about all of the time.

I have a PS5 and a gaming PC in my study. The PC has a 35" Ultra Wide monitor 1440p and a 27" 1440 Monitor and a TLC 43" Qled tv. I have played the PS5 on the monitors and the TV, it's way better on the TV, the additional screen size and fact it's designed around TV play is a massive benefit IMO.

Speaker wise I use these both of these below Links to items. The Edifier speakers are better for Music and Movies with the Majority better for gaming. I used to run a 5.1 setup but it was getting long in the tooth. I also run a DAC for music as well so Hi Res Lossless sounds great.

TCL 43C655K 43" Smart 4K Ultra HD HDR QLED TV - TLC 43C

Edifier R1280DB - Via Optical to the TV - Edifier Speakers

MAJORITY D100 - Via Optical to the PC - Majority Speakers

Thanks, that is very helpful. From what I have seen so far, consoles are not set up for ultra wide screens and so I would no be spending on that. Also not spending on an OLED TV however much I would love one. Looking to spend £250 or there abouts to go in the office room upstairs now my ex is not there to work from it. The 1440 monitor is where I was looking but something more cheap and cheerful. Currently looking at this but have no idea on monitors so guessing really;

Yeah do not mess around with UW Monitors, the PS5 does not support it teh Series X does but I would get a decent 1440p normal monitor.

Those MSI screens are not good. I am a fan of MSI products and have both a 34" UW 1440 and a 27" 4K as my daily use set up (which doubles for gaming when I'm not working).

I got my lad a couple of the WQHD ones listed and they were bad. Really bad, color bleed, blurring and running hot. Sent them back and got two of these AOCs and they've been great.

EtA: That 32" AOC looks bloody good value.

That AOC one is the very one I posted a link to and is in my basket waiting for payday
Check ebuyer as well. As they usually have decent cashback through TopCashback. I’ve earned loads through curry’s and ebuyer this year on monitors and PCs for work and prices are usually really good

FWIW I used this basic one:

1440p @120Hz - a must for competitive play. The TVs even those that claim to have 120Hz can be hit and miss.
