I am a new golfer with a 25 handicap.I hit a PB of 93 a few weeks ago..been dreadful since. But yesterday I played with different set of lads (better golfers than I am used to playing with ).Had the round of my life until the 17th...including parring stroke index 1 hole for 1st time...was sitting on 82 with 2 'not difficult holes to finish on'.....so realized I could beat my PB,,,if..if..if..

Took 9 at the 17th and 5 at the last..to end on 96...ABSOLUTELY GUTTED and walked off the course downhearted even thogh I won our 'mini comp' and put my best round in...in weeks

you broke rule one mate, you chased a score and forgot the game. NEVER work out your points are your going and never tot up your scores until your off the 18th green or in the bar.

You realised you was on for a PB, tensed up and chased it. it dont work like that.

What Oddsock said and also, you played GREAT for 16 holes... not many 25 handicap players play 16 good holes in a round. You should have walked off with a huge grin as you should yourself that somewhere inside you is a golfer. By the by I would have been like you but we both would have been wrong.

Good shooting Tex.

Unlucky, but it will come be patient.
I remember a couple of years ago at Ifracombe my best was 93,i was on the 16 tee sitting on 75,two pars 3s and a par four left,i finished 5 10 5 for 95.Now my best up there is 76 so it will come.

Not quite as bad but last night I played on my own just for some good practice, played some good/bad shots as usual, but overall was feeling quite happy with my round. :D :D
I was walking up to our 17th green with just my putter in my hand when I started thinking about the amount of putts I had had
Yeah you got it 25 foot downhill and i leave it 5 feet short
Still haven't had a round without a 3 putt this year :o :o

Like others have said it will come but you have to learn not to get ahead of yourself. The same is true once you play comps. Get a good round going and start thinking about the cup/prizes etc and its a recipe to blow up big time. Take heart on the 16 good ones and learn from the two bad ones

oddsocks:I know I know i know I should not have done that as I made the same mistake a few weeks ago....BUT i couldnt help doing the same thing again....but your right I tensed up became unrelaxed and chased it.Hopefully next time I will learn and have more will power

Cheers

Alex...cheers for those nice words..I did play great for nearly the hole round, especially for my hcap as you point out.
Had time to dwell on it now and feel more positive.

HJS:I have alreay played in a few comps, and managed to win the midweek monthly medal (albeit only 20 odd golfers in it ).But going to the last couple of holes then it never crossed my mind I had a chance of winning so I just played the game out nicely.Good job I didnt no or chances are I would have fallen apart!

I have taken heart from my overall very good game and really it was only the 1 bad hole with the terrible 9,which incidentally I went and PARRED yesterday!

Thanks

Kev

I think knowing your score or how you're doing is ok, but you MUST forget about it while you're playing each shot.

Wondering whether or not you left the iron on/tap running/what's for dinner while you're playing shots will have the same effect. If you're thinking about something else you're not 100% committed to the shot you're about to play.
