Friendlies & bounce games - Gimmes or Let's just see that one in?

Never concede a putt if its for birdie or better! even in friendly games!

Is the right answer.

I don't mind a gimme, I personally prefer to hole everything but tend to go with the flow. I do wonder about the length that some folk extend gimme range to though.

I've not read all the replies but I like to hole out all the time, I think its a dangerous precedent to get given gimmies because when it matters the knees start knocking! Just like in matchplay, I may give a few early doors but then I'll hit him/her with a couple of short ones, the look of surprise that's its not been given and the fear of missing is a beautiful thing to see snigger.gif

It does help to hole out two footers on the course. It is not the same on the putting green. Many more slopes and winds affecting the ball out on the course.
.

The nature and position of your practice putting green really aren't relevant to the wider issues.

Whether the putt has consequences is absolutely everything.

Whether the putt has consequences is absolutely everything.

So therefore presumably depends on ones interpretation of "consequences".

In our swindle, top scores win money and bottom score gets a ritual humiliation, so all scores are significant (within our definition). So we don't play gimmes. Elsewhere with mates in friendlies, gimme all you like.

If a putt, or any shot for that matter, has no consequence, why be out on the course?
Why not hit the range or simply go for a walk.....

In a friendly round with mates, have no issues with gimmes at all, life's too short..... We don't give them for par or less but if it's for a bogey or worse, and inside a putter grip feel free to pick up. It's a bit of fun, not a major comp.

Gimmies are ridiculous. What's the point in putting holes in the ground then? It's the end point of every hole. Would you give someone a goal when playing footie as they are about to shoot? "yeah you can have that, you'd have scored anyway". Utter rubbish. Would you give someone who is about to drive off a gimmie and let them drop 250 down the middle of the fairway as they'd been doing it all day? No you wouldn't. The game of golf is played from tee to hole on green. The greenkeepers try and find interesting hole location to catch us out and it just might be you. Man up and putt everything, it's part of the game.

PS I bet Dustin would have loved to be playing gimmies on Sunday. LOL

I know who he means, but he may have mellowed since the weekend.

No I have not mellowed.

As a few have mentioned I don't give gimmies so don't expect one if you play with me.

For me I like to putt everything out purely because then it becomes a habit.

If others want to play games and all agree then no problem but I have seen players give 4 footers.

This grip length rubbish is open to abuse.

And all this nonsense about speeding up play is mental if your in that much of a hurry you shoudnt be out there imo.

One thing I don't like though is anyone marking[unless on someones line] 6" putts that's not on imo.

Can't wait until we next play together snigger.gif

If its the usual pee taking bounce game you might be given something from 2ft but be then asked to hole out from 9". All part of the banter - love it!!

And then on the finishing stretch the banter can get a bit wicked - its only a game...

Requiring someone to hole out from 1" is ridiculous and a total waste of every bodies time.

This. If everyone holed out every putt I wonder how slow the average round would take on a Saturday ....

Sorry but if all 4 in a group did this it would take seconds.

Someone who still plays on when he cant score a point is more ridiculous and takes many extra minutes but playing partners say nothing.
