Friendlies & bounce games - Gimmes or Let's just see that one in?

Sorry but if all 4 in a group did this it would take seconds.

.

time it; it doesn't - in all seriousness it can and (for some) does take a very very long time!

1. obviously you mustn't putt out of turn, or tread on another players line, so you don't putt out you mark.
2. now it's someone else to putt
3. repeat step 1 if they miss
4. discuss who's next and, inevitably this close to the hole, you are going to have to move a marker (maybe 2)
5. someone finally holes a putt!
6. discussion as to who's next to putt (complicated by the fact that not all the markers reflect the actual position of the balls.....)
7. replace all the markers and measure
8. move a marker because it's now in the way of the person who's putt is next
9. putt out
10. get reminded you didn't move the marker back so you have to putt again from the correct position.......

repeat 18 times

yep - seconds are involved..........loads of them.

note - I deliberately omitted lining up the ball marks each time - that would obviously be ridiculous as well (but would happen in practice)

I do believe you have mis understood my reply.

My reply was to the 1" putt so none of the above would happen and take seconds.

If you didn't mis understand my reply was to the 1" putt then you are being argumentative for the sake of it.

Many, many other things that happen all around the course take longer than any 1" putt.

I think the general point is , that if every person on the course is made to putt out every time it would be ridiculous , And take ages . How many times would you have to keep marking your putt because you have a foot left but can't stand there because your on someone else's line . Then you have to move your marker that's on someone else's line . It would take ages .

I totally agree it would take ages if we did all the above but in reality it does not happen,in bounce games players just lean over and other players let you go on their line purely because it is a bounce game.

If posters are being pedantic then they can make it sound a lot worse than it really is.

At both RAGC and Blackmoor medals take no more than 4 hours so not sure why it should take ages in a bounce game.

Do you play in competitions? That's how long it takes for everyone to hole out (or I hope they do anyway).

In bounce games, what's ridiculous is when people want to mark a 12" putt when their proper stance would be on someone else's line.

If it's so easy that's it's a gimme, knock it in off one foot leaning over to reach it. If it's tricky enough to want to take your proper stance then it isn't a gimme IMO.

My point isn't if it's tricky enough it shouldn't be a gimme. My point is the theory of being made to hole everything is quite petty . Especially in bounce games .

I have never played a bounce game holing every putt in over 40 years. I play for fun and if someone insisted I holed from an inch in a friendly I would tell them exactly where they could swivel from.

This is exactly my point .......... Some people are insisting that every putt must be holed .

This.

If you are keeping a score in a bounce game them knock it in. If not pick it up.

When we play for the pound or whatever, we always knock em in as someone will miss one and get laughed at. Why give up that opportunity ?

If the pros can give putts in match play with their livelihoods on the line I reckon I can give a few in bounce games.
Yes I'm more likely to miss but its a game, its not like your protecting the field in a medal. Doesn't worry me in the slightest if I'm not given them though makes me a bit more determined if someone wants to see the tiddlers holed.

They can try.

One of my regular partners once declared he was going to putt every thing out in a friendly 4BBB. He find it difficult to do so after he lagged a putt up, and I conceded the next one, and threw his ball back to him. We are not playing a medal, stableford or other competition, we are playing a friendly and we want to keep moving. I am too old for phaffing about.
