Friendlies & bounce games - Gimmes or Let's just see that one in?

I'll give anything that I'd feel confident of putting in myself....but if its across the slope or a decent break (even from 1 foot) I'd ask for it to be putted.

wednesdays and fridays in our money stableford (stokeplay only once a month) - no gimmes
sunday it's friedndly matchplay for a pint and putts are - sometimes rather generously - conceded

forgot 1 exception. two weeks ago during course maintainence we were playing upon a couple of temporary greens. on these every putt within 1 putterlength was conceded

Don't understand the nature of gimmies. Golf is all about getting the ball from tee to in the hole - not near it!

Offer gimmies and you might as well agree on the tee to start 200 yards down the fairway.

completely flawed

unless it really matters you aren't practicing or honing anything - in fact the complete opposite.

also what you should do is stop standing around the hole tapping things in, or endlessly marking and replacing balls, and get to the next tee.

It does help to hole out two footers on the course. It is not the same on the putting green. Many more slopes and winds affecting the ball out on the course.

Agreed that you shouldn't be standing around the hole tapping things in during the bleak mid winter. Completely fine in the summer. I have been asking people to leave the balls until the last person holes out in winter and they can lift them all out. Reduces traffic around the hole.

Normally we give plenty of gimmees as we play for fun. Same group on golf trips when we play for skins, every putt has to hit the bottom of the cup. Money does terrible things to your putting and it adds a really fun edge to playing. I wouldn't want to do it every time though.

In the context of this thread the nature of a gimmie is to acknowledge that 9/10 are going to be holed by your mate so just give it and move on... but its needs to be limited to 18" max, your 200 yard gimmie is rather generous by any standard

There's a fair bit that goes on in friendly games when handicap not at stake, tapping down a spike mark, placing on fairways etc maybe even a mulligan off the 1st, or a 'just for fun' reload with driver on that driveable par 4 where your mate took an iron to be safe, whatever your group decides on really because its just a friendly round

When just playing for fun with mates, gimmee's are used, normally less generous with one mate as he gets wound up when he has to putt from distances others have been given!

I'm surprised how few people on here have the 'circle of friendship'

If it's just me a my m8 playing we don't tend to play against each other. We just knock it round for fun.

I'll keep score of my round but he rarely does. So we never really play gimmes. If he doesn't want to hole out, fine by me. But to be honest most of the time we both will.

If we have others join us then we tend to play them. Anything within 2ft is usually given. 3ft and it depends if theirs some break around the hole, any further and it's usually has to be holed.

The 'COF' became a bit of a standing joke on a trip down to Cornwall a few years ago :D

I played in a knockout match the other night. I was 5 up after 5 and feeling a bit guilty.
On the 6th hole, my opponent had a 3 foot putt for half.
I didn't give it.
He missed.
I felt awful for a few seconds....
:D

Was it Forest Pines or Woodhall Spa where you missed that 2 inch putt? I said I felt bad for you.... but I didn't really mean it ;)

Forest Pines. 8th hole. Great drive down the right, followed by a solid 8 iron in. Wind was coming in at 3mph over my right shoulder and I barely took a divot. Played a lovely slight draw that checked second bounce and spun back to the hole.
I'd forgotten all about that.

Never give anything, we always hole out even in bounce games, lads in our squad are very competitive , gave my mate 7&6 last night, he was not chuffed:thup:
