Ok PJ has made a brilliant suggestion, lots of people have weighed in with some good ideas so here's a proposal. I have concerns about the viability of a matchplay event start to finish simply because of logistics but like the idea of a matchplay finale...

So, how about a big team effort to get to that place. I'm willing to collate all results and post regular leaderboard updates.

duncan_mackie and other rules gurus can help me figure out a modified CSS model. We then use CSS against SSS to adjust scores so that the difficulty of course and conditions are taken into consideration

The wonderful forum organise lots of forum meets and to qualify for the OOM you need to play a minimum of 2. Only meets with a minimum of 12 people count. Your best two combined scores count in the OOM.

GM help out with the finale and the top 16 at the end of the year (Jan-Sept) qualify and play four matches over a weekend leading to positions from 1-16 and hopefully a thing or two for the top three.

Thoughts?

TOTALY selfish view here Tiger so apologies for that .. as we have one meet at most over here it means we would all have to travel over to play one be even considered & then travel over again if we did qualify , makes it expensive , also for the one we do have we would possibly need new members to even get 12 forumers ..

But when you do meet up you play more than one round don't you? So theoretically both rounds could count. We could modify the minimum numbers as well I was just thinking logistically for me all the smaller meets would make it a bit of a nightmare. Open to modifications that get more people involved :)

Sounds like a cracking idea. If we did it so certain meets were nominated events people would make more of an effort to get there I reckon. Call it the GM Majors or something!

I have no idea what any of that means or why you need 12 people but if I happen to play in any meets and all I have to do is TELL YOU THE SCORES OF ALL 12 PEOPLE regardless of what format we are playing (which sounds complicated as it is) and that somehow puts me on an order of merit - then so be it.

Doesn't sound very exciting to me though. Can I be the best player if I only play in 2 events or does someone who plays more than me become a better scorer/player by default? ... and this is regional? I'm totally lost, sorry :o

Great idea mate. I would love to get to one of the local meets, I'll keep my eyes peeled for future events.

You spotted the Beau Desert meet in April?

Sounds a good idea, personally would favour a series of regional qualifiers so you don't potentailly end up with all finalists from one region?

I would add for the 200th time though- just play one stableford match regionally and then put 4 people from each region forward to a national ONE ROUND stableford match. Calculating CSS? Playing multiple times on multiple dates? Plain daft- it's not the pro tour- some people can't commit to this!

One downside is if we do it this way is there could be loads of people from the same area in the final which would make it a bit dull imo.

Another downside is that the people who play most will breeze it. For example in the north west of England next year there will probably be 10+ meets that fit this bill where some areas might only have 2 or 3?

I think the wonder final is where as many different regions of the forum are represented imo.

JO the CSS suggestion was just a means of levelling the playing field if one meet was at West Hill and another was at my course those playing my course would have an advantage.

That said I'm hearing what a lot of you are saying, which takes us back to VCs nominated regional qualifier(s). The issue for me was if you can't make the date you're scuppered...

I think this is a really good idea, as we could split into regions perhaps eleven with the top three going forward to a grand final.

Maybe South West, South East, Wales, Midlands, North East, Central, North West, East, Scotland, N.I, Eire?

Please see my post on the original "Could this be done" thread for my suggestion as to how it could work. Regional events, playoffs and then a grand final. A bit of stableford but more importantly keeping a couple of rounds of match play in there as well as per the original idea.

I think each region should decide how they produce their qualifiers of the back of numbers interested. All the people interested in each region chat and then vote how they wish to play it.

There would be some number crunching involved to equal out the qualifiers as some regions might have low numbers but it could be done imo.

Yeh, I didn't mean to be grouchy but the process all sounds a long winded one and the difficulty in arranging games/meets where there have to be so many people will be practically impossible. Not to mention stableford isn't real golf

What I was imagining is that I put my £10 in and you say to me "James, you've got to play Pieman in a matchplay before 20th December"

That's it, done.

After that I will know that I've got to play Murph by the 20th Jan, ChrisD by the 20th Feb and TheRod by 20th March... then it's onto the regionals before I pick up the trophy at Lytham in October

(semi finals in the morning and finals in the afternoon, where the losing semifinalist will be my caddy in the afternoon of course!!)

Hang on... I think I fell asleep there again and had a very similar dream to my earlier one

But it's down to whomever is going to rope some kind of comp together, to be honest I'm not really that interested in an Order of Merit. My h/cap tells me what my ranking is. But if others prefer an OOM that's fine by me.... it's the majority vote that should count (and whoever wants to do the organising) not just my opinion
