Football Cheats

Although I like football, I hate all the diving, feigning injury and cheating that goes on. Referees need to have eyes in the back of their heads and the judgement of Solomon to keep control of things. Trying to con the Ref almost seems to be an accepted part of the game. Incidentally I tried refereeing for a year after I stopped playing football and hated it. It is not nice to have every decision questioned and your parentage questioned at regular intervals. I'm surprised that anybody wants to be a ref, but a game cannot be played without one. Perhaps football should take out a leaf from Rugby, where the referee has to be respected and his decision is always final.

But then Football is a gentleman's game played by oafs, Rugby is an oaf's game played by gentlemen! :mmm:

Rugby players don't seem to be acting like gentlemen at the moment as well

Rugby, ah yes, the sport with currently, the highest number of Drug Bans for any sport in the UK. maybe we shouldn't take a leaf out of their book.

Mic the referee in the Premiership as is done in rugby. This is something that football could learn and benefit from.

Definitely agree, this is one area I think could really help, sadly Referees are not even allowed to be interviewed after a game.

Would help a bit but don't think it would change much of the major issues

As football managers such as Arsene Wenger are always blaming refereeing decisions for their team's defeat (even if they played rubbish) in post match interviews, perhaps the Referee should also be interviewed to give his point of view!

P.S. Another thing I don't like in modern football is all the pushing and holding that goes on in the penalty area whenever a free kick or corner is being taken. If referees would award a few penalties or free kicks for this, it would soon stop!

I think a football sin-bin could work for on-field disciplinary issues, such as swearing directly at an official, unnecessary crowding of official, dissent, etc.

I remember an experiment in early 2000s to penalise a team 10 yards for similar dissent issues. Apparently it was scrapped by FIFA because some footballing nations who don't understand rugby didn't get the logic behind the rule.

Refs have been miked before and I don't see the merit. I would however like them to be given the leeway to go to the media and be able to explain contentious decisions from their perspective rather than being hidden away and prevented by the authorities

I imagine that players/clubs sponsors would be rather shocked at the outbursts and the impact upon their image and this behavior (the arguing, backchat to the ref and cheating) would be stamped out within a season. Sponsors threatening to pull out and affect revenue streams would soon nip them up.

It's won't happen however, not that I care, as I gave up on football entirely several years ago.

I saw something on Sky (couple of seasons ago) about La Liga where they miked a ref up in a game. Some very industrious language and showed how hard a job the ref has with the amount of diving and trying to get opposition booked or sent off. I can see how the very top players would be affected by the loss of image rights/sponsors but even then once they are on the pitch it would be furthest from their mind

Interesting point - would liked to have seen that programme. Don't envy the ref's one bit, they're under the cosh from all directions. There are years of dreadful, entrenched, shoddy behavior to eradicate - still think hitting the pockets of those involved would get their attention quickest as they're generally not the sharpest tools in the box.

How about, in top matches they have a referee in each half of the pitch. It would be more likely they would be more up with play and each could assist the other on decisions depending who had the better view

Why wouldn't it work?

They'd probably disagree on some decisions:rofl:

In European games they have two extra officials yet still miss plenty of incidents - don't think it's a case of being up with play being a problem

That is what the linesmen/assistant referees are supposed to do! The main ref runs on a sort of diagonal line between them, so that most parts of the pitch are covered. Remember that the linesmen in professional football are qualified refs in their own right.

The refs still can't keep up with play and they only see incidents from one angle. In Europe, the officials behind the goal don't seem to be allowed to make decisions. Two qualified refs working in tandem should improve the chances of making the right decisions

The extra officials in Europe are neither use or ornament. They don't seem empowered to give anything, especially possible penalty decisions. They don't always seem to get involved in discussions when the ref asks for help from the linesman despite arguably being as close and with a different view
