Finding balls in a group

The BIG question for me is when in a match how hard you look for your opponents ball. My buddy searches as if it is his own ball he's looking for - I tend to look for opponents ball rather less enthusiastically...always in the right area and honestly - but not really exerting myself too much - is that naughty of me?
I search just as hard, so that when I find it I can put my foot on it. Worked perfectly on Sunday when I found Drive4Shows ball in the rough, and he could only shank it out of his new lie.

When searching for a playing partner's ball I will always try to make sure it is found or replaced. If I find one I hand it over. If I find two then I will keep the better one for myself. If he finds one then anything I find is mine. If it is something I don't play then I will hand it over or add to the practice bag.

I am one of the very few that plays Taylor Made balls at my course and I have distinct markings on them. One day I was out with a regular playing partner who told me he found one the day before. He took it out and I expected him to hand it to me. Instead he tee'd it up and decided to play it.

I used to search for anyones ball with enthusiasm....then noticed a couple of my regulars were not quite as keen....one actually walked past it claiming he couldn't see it. So now I don't bother looking that hard anymore.

That's a bit naughty....not to mention cause some confusion with playing the wrong ball.

I played a few months back & while searching for my newer srixons, I came across an old ddh of mine (with my markings) in the same bush. I had lost it in there end of last year!

I generally as the same as most people here if I find a ball I use or will use Ill keep it, but find the better balls is getting alot less common now so i usually do offer the ball to someone else.

As far as I'm concerned any ball you find while looking for anyone's ball is yours.

If it's premium I'll keep it for myself.

If I wouldn't play it myself and it's in ok condition I used to ask others in the group if they wanted it, but now I keep it for my daughter as our par 3 course has a lot of water for a beginner.

I will look for anyone else's (FC or opponent) ball as if it were my own.

Have to say, I am slightly shocked at you of all people asking this. harry vardon must be turning in his grave.

When helping someone look for their ball you should look for it with as much gusto as if it were your own. if you do not then you have thrown fairness and etiquette out the window.

I enjoy the challenge of finding a ball at times. I like to prove others wrong when they begin to search in the complete wrong place claiming they have it marked. Loo

Sure it can be a drag sometimes but it is part and parcel of the game.

Oh I look thoroughly enough - but my buddy keeps digging and searching even when his opponent is giving up the ghost. It's at that point that I tend to ease off. Don't get me wrong - I never wish to win a hole by default, but by my own efforts.

I tend to search as thoroughly as if it was my ball... trouble is some folks seem to attach an awful lot of importance to their balls compared to me

We've no doubt all seen them, the ones who search like its the only one they brought and it was bequeathed by a long lost relative... and their searching in a red staked area!

Ah - but when you are two down with two to play and your opponent is hunting for his ball in the deep rough - be honest - do you look for his ball as fervently and thoroughly as if it were your own. Or do you actively look in the area of his ball but maybe don't dig under every clump or flattened area of grass that might be hiding his ball.

I have to admit to on one or two of such occasions not being the most diligent hunter of balls. Shameful I know. But he put it there :)

I couldn't give 2 hoots about the actual ball itself. What I care about is that if I don't find it that's 40% of my handicap gone.

I only bother picking up decent balls nowadays. Anything I don't want, or that no-one I'm playing with wants I'll leave just off the fairway. Missus plays Pro V1's, so if I find one of those I'll give it to her, Pro V1x's are mine. Don't find many decent balls at my place though, mostly brand new Top Flite's, Dunlops or Callaway Warbirds. No thanks.

I always search as if it's my own ball and expect others to do likewise.

I suppose that comes from when I first started playing - we were all hackers and finding balls was always so much easier if everyone searched at the same time and so covered more area. That continued into competitive play, including matchplay, once I'd joined a club. Still feel the same way now - would prefer to win....but fairly!:)

Most pick-ups I find go into the practice bag, except any that the player whose ball is lost wants (to make up for the lost one). Only fair!
