Challenge Tour Pro
Everything came together nicely for this morning's round. My previous best was 92, but I managed to knock out an 88 today.
Started pretty poorly in all honesty, pulled my first tee shot into the clag, slapped my approach into a bunker, and then 3 putted from 10 foot, so I wasn't expecting much at all after the double bogey start. Got a tidy bogey on our 640yd par 5 second, had a nice par putt effort from 15 or so feet and left myself a 6 inch tap-in.
On our third, i'd found the fairway (for a change) but the pin was protected by the front bunker. Deliberately took an 8 iron instead of a 7 to give myself a chance of a more accurate shot left of the sand, into the mouth of the green. Left myself a chip, and fancied getting it close enough to the flag for a single putt par. Left myself a 15-18 footer after an over aggressive chip, but it was one of those that rolled home. That gave me confidence, and I managed to let the treble on the stroke index 2 4th slip straight out of my mind. I parred 5 and took a double on our par 3 6th. Then I turned into Westwood for about 20 minutes. I reduced the 381yd par 4 7th to Driver, 52* and a putt to make birdie, and then clipped a 9 iron to 6 foot from the pin on our 8th - a 136 yard par 3, stunning hole, nice island green that can play for me as short as a PW, or as long as a 6/7 iron. Back to back birdies, and the first time i've ever birdied 2 holes in one round.
Finished up with a double bogey on 9, which was fortunate, given that i'd topped my drive about 50 yards after the excitement of 2 birdies - I love how golf brings you back to Earth pretty sharpishly. Went out with an 8 over par 44, that gave me 22 points.
The back 9 wasn't spectacular, but steady stuff, which for me is a pleasant change. I managed 3 pars, 4 bogeys and 2 doubles to come back with another 44, which gave me 23 points back for a total of 45 points. Gross 88 for a nett 63.
Absolutely over the moon with it. My goal for the year was to beat my PB of 92, but I thought i'd only manage a 91 or 90 - I thought I was a long way off breaking 90. Slapped my card over the counter after the round and the boy said I was looking at a "big cut" - i'll be more than happy with that. Re-evaluated goals are to knock a round of 85 and keep the handicap moving in the right direction on a more regular basis.
HID is pretty happy too, as i've not come home wanting to snap anything and everything in the bag - everyone's a winner today. Chuffed.
