fairway woods - can anyone just not hit them?

Reckon I would be better with a hybrid then, rather than the 3 or 5 wood. Whats the general length difference between a 3 hybrid and a 4 iron? Looking for something to play between 190 and 220.

Why not try the RBZ Stage2 High launch 5 wood. Fantastic club for off the fairway, and it does fly it high.
The best £159 I've spent on a club since I started playing!

Without being overly rude, but off 17, the 3 wood off the deck is always going to be a risky shot and hard to execute. I can play it but it is a high tariff. I would be looking at a 5W or 3 hybrid. Both are easier to hit off the deck and the 3H in particular is versatile not only out of the rough but around the green

Homer, just out of interest when you refer to a 3H what loft are we talking about as different manufacturers' use different lofts for the same hybrid number. My 4H is a TM RBZ and has a 21 Deg loft and it defintely fills the gap between 4i and 5W in terms of distance at 175, maybe 185? This thread is of interest for me as I have been looking for an alternative to my 3W for the winter and picked up the RBZ 2H in the sales. It has 16.5 deg of loft and has a shaft 1.5-2" shorter than the 3W, only used it once on the range and first impressions are that it is much more difficult to find the sweetshot that my 4H, but good distance when you do find it and reasonably straight. I'll just have to see how it goes, I've taken a chance buy which may or may not pay off.

Anyone tried the new tight lies fairway woods? Look abit of a crossover between a hybrid and a wood. Would love to try one off the grass instead of a practise mat.

I can nail my 3 wood off the deck 7 out of 10 times, mind you my driving has been so bad lately I'm finding I need my 3 wood more and more just to make up some distance on my second shot

I can hit my 3 wood off the deck dependant on the lie etc , I also have a 3 and 4 hybrid I don't have many problems hitting from the deck either if the lie isn't as good ill always use the 4 . Im thinking of buying a 5 wood to try out .

Bobmac I dont have one, thats my dilemma wether to buy one and stick with it or not. Its a club iv never been able to play with. I know it adds alot to my dads game. If money wasnt an issue id buy a 3 wood and hybrid and persist with it over winter.

I could not hit anything above a 3 iron off the deck until I got a lesson.

I was coming so far from the inside there was no chance. To hit a wood off the deck you really have to be on plane.

Check alignment, stance and aim first. Then work on keeping the right hand out of the shot. After those two woods should start to fly, they did for me!

Then go get a lesson!

That's interesting, do you normally hit a draw? What is your miss with the fairway wood, a hook? When I went to see the Pro about woods, mainly the driver, he was trying to get me to swing more inside to stop me casting out and slicing. My main miss with the fairway wood is a steep angle of attack resulting in a fat shot. When I do hit my 5 wood well it does tend to be with a slight fade, but I like this shape as it provides a higher flight and softer bounce which gives you a better chance of stopping the ball on a green. On our course we have quite a few long par 4's for which you are using a fairway wood or hybrid for the second shot.
