Does your club penalise you for slow play?

I've played a couple of rounds where we have been held up all the way round only to have problems within the group on the 17th and find ourselves coming up the 18th looking like we have been falling behind. Not fair to get penalised in those situations.

If you play a provisional ball, the most time a lost ball should cost you is 5 minutes. Otherwise play Stablefords where there is no necessity to complete every hole. You do have the option of calling the following group through, assuming that they are reasonably close behind you. The implications of doing this in relation to penalty shots were discussed in post #13. :)

Unlike some people on here I do read the thread. Post # 13 was about the group behind being let through and the possibility of them getting the penalty and not the offenders.

I have been playing golf for 40 years and I am well aware of letting the group behind through, picking up in Stablefords and provisionals thank you very much!!

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

there was talk last year after a few of the really slow players insisted on playing early during comps. the whole field were held up by them. then club asked to have times marked for start and finish so they had hard evidence on the slow ones and they would then be told they had to play last if the could not get round in a certain time. didn't work as there were a few call offs and sods law the worst offenders ended up in two balls , a few comps running though there were spoken to as they both managed to hold the field but not as badly

Nah then I was gonna post this a month or so ago but here goes.
The EGU recommends for a three ball 12 mins to play a par three, 14 mins for a par 4 and 17 mins for a par five.
At that, our course for a three ball should take 4 hrs and 16 mins. That is on a A4 sheet that has been pinned on a notice board.
if the three/ fourball in front of you has a stonking round don't lose any ball and finishes sometime before you as long as you finish within the EGUs guidelines where's the problem.

But if the rough is high and wet - you loose a ball and take the 5 minutes to look, as the rules permit the times can go out the window; who then arbitrates over the mitigating circumstances?

Orwellian state on the golf course - gawd help us!

Exactly and the fact that there's 18 holes on a course so one ball is lost every hole, it's gonna be a long un. That aside it does need looking at. Played Thursday and me and a pal got out just in front of a four ball. We teed off when they were 30 yd from the first tee. We were walking off the first when they were walking off the first tee. By the time we had putted out on the 8th they were playing approach shots onto the sixth. It was stacked up behind them and body language was telling me a lot of folk were not happy.

There was a big thread about this last week or the week before wasn't there? One club were trying to do things, think it was Phils but some didn't seem to like what they were trying. Lots of people said what their clubs do in there 

There seems to be a new thread about slow play every bloody week!

Seems a rather Draconian implementation, especially if there were extenuating circumstances that wouldn't have the chance to be explained before the penalty is applied, as per the OP. Out of interest Sawtooth, where are you playing these days

Sawtooth's example is really good. It has really sorted the issue out. I remember starting off playing under that rule and had the same sort of misgivings, however everyone , and I mean everyone, knows what it is and why it is there, and it just does work. To be honest the amount of time is loads.

I was concerned that you could be on time all the way round then have a mare on 17 and 18 while the group in front have great holes at the same time. That happened to one of my groups once and we still came in time.

Good move. Good proactive club management for a change
