does stableford favour higher hc players?

Another myth! Congu have stats somewhere that show the likelihood of playing to handicap or buffer is pretty much the same for all Categories. That's why the buffer is large for higher handicappers!

How do you thin the low guys got to their low handicap btw. Exactly the same way the high handicappers got to theirs!

The only concession re low to high would be the ability to get a couple of shots lower handicap. That tends to take longer for low handicappers than for high ones - but is not what the handicap is about!

OK, I'll bow down to your stats. But can you tell me why some, perhaps many, low cat 1 guys won't play qualifiers in poor conditions\over winter?

Stableford isn't real golf anyway, it's designed to make the higher handicapper feel good about his play 'cause even they can pick up a birdie or two in a round :p

Well said! The acid test will always be medal stroke play. Stablefords are nothing more than a novelty form of golf.

covering both your morning questions (I hope)

1. stableford is (normally) a lot quicker to play, and not just by high handicaps! It's no fun having to find your 2nd provisional tee shot or face going back and playing 7 off the tee!
2.there can be reasons, generally associated with the state of the greens which the lower guys rely on more than high, but there are also many who are protective of their handicaps and unable to practice at this time of the year - so they don't want to play Q rounds until the lighter evenings etc. Not suggesting it's the case with the ones you know, but there's the same 'we don't play in knockouts 'cos we can't win' etc etc
Looking at the entries all the low guys played the Q comps at our club this winter - despite the conditions.

I'm with bigslice on this - I just play (my impersonation of) golf regardless of the format.

When I enter a comp, I don't care if I win or not, I'm just trying to beat my h/cap every time I play so that I can get cut. I'd rather play off 7 and win nothing than play off 12 and pick up the odd pot.
