Do you enjoy matchplay

My hatred stems from courses that assign Stroke Index purely by difficulty- in my experience that's most....
Giving shots on the most difficult holes, when according to handicap I need a shot as well, is almost like giving 3 or 4 holes away before you start. Having to par SI 1 for a half when it's the most difficult hole ain't easy. Also giving shots on a par 3 and your Oppo stiffs one to 6 inches - that'll be a hole-in-one for a half then......
That's why I dislike Matchplay

Maybe coz the only time we tried the format I stuffed him :) :)

I do like matchplay. Had some good runs in club singles comps incuding reaching 2 finals one year (lost both :( ). Played a lot of club matches and a lot of our friendly golf is 4BBB matchplay.

I just like the fact that it requires a different approach and actually having an opponent can focus my game in a way that playing against the course/field sometimes doesn't. Like the tactical side too especially with 4BBB. And there's nothing like a close match to get the competitive juices flowing or reeling in your opponent after being 4 down.

However I hardly play competitive matchplay now as I found arranging the games to be a chore, trying to fit them in with other commitments.

Different mindset to medal, you have to change your thinking.

I have no time for the low handicap players who don't play as they have to give lots of shots.

At my old club there was a huge entry for the handicap match play, sometimes you had to play eight rounds to the final.
I got to two finals playing off 4/5 and each time I lost to a single figure player.
It was very rare that a double digit handicapper won the trophy.

Well seeing as I have dished out 2 thrashings this year already, I have to say i enjoy it. Got my first doubles match next weekend.

I agree with this, giving shots on the hardest holes that both players should get shots on just seems daft. The shots should be given on the holes after the ones that the lower handicapper wouldn't normally get a shot on. For example, if I played Imurg, he off 5 and me off 11, I would get shots on holes with SI 6 to 11.

Either that or all course should have separate SIs for matchplay, or better still, not allocate SIs based mainly on difficulty,

But surely if your opponent is getting a shot, it is because based on handicap you should be one shot better than him.

Personally I love matchplay whether i'm giving or getting shots. It's a battle of will as well as skill, I was 4 down with 5 to play last year and decided that the guy(who was not well liked in the club) was not going to beat me. Won the last 5 holes to win :whoo:
