Do you enjoy matchplay

I much prefer matchplay to strokeplay, I throw in two many doubles to play well at strokeplay, being inconsistent in matchplay sometimes doesn't do as much harm as in medal play.

I and my partner have just qualified for the knock out stages of one of our board comps. Now after qualifying for a couple last year and playing really badly in the matchplay stage I swore I wasn't going to play in any board comps that had a matchplay element to them. I just do not play as well in matchplay as I do in medal competitions. I'm really not looking forward to the next round. Do you enjoy or dread matchplay?

I played my Knockout Match this evening DB in singles format and its my first time ever playing this.....I qualified for it after shooting a 1 under round and made the last 32....
I was drawn against the lad that works in our club shop...He plays off 4....So i had 9 shots on him....Anyway i loved playing tonight and lost on the 16th...He was 3 up on me playing 16 so i had to win the hole to stay alive..... Hit a good drive and had 180 mtrs to the green but i was just off the fairway in the rough....I got greedy and pulled a 5 iron and the rough grabbed it and opened the face putting my 2nd shot into deep trouble.....

I enjoyed the experience of it and held my own getting it back to being 1 down standing on the 12th but it was my own bad shots that cost me in the end...He was steady throughout the round......

He made me feel really at ease and it felt like we were out just for a knockabout...... And i played really well at times....He was full of compliments for my game and said i wont be long getting down the handicap with the way i played....That alone was a great compliment for me.....

Would i play it again? Probably.......
If id met someone that was a bit of an ass it would definitely have a bearing on me playing that format again....

But i got some great experience and a new found confidence in myself as well.

Dont like them although I play in them. Dont know why, but I do. Funny thing is, I try like hell to Q for the club championship then I cant be bothered with the match play.

Matchplay is my favourite format, you can be on the edge of losing only for a moment of fortune/madness and you're back in contention.

We have a pairs and a singles matchplay board comps every year but nothing else really.

Only ever played it once but did enjoy it. Also just qualified for our 16-24 handicap knockout cup which now we are in the last 8 is a straight matchplay knockout cup.

enjoy the format, setting up the ties is the pain in the behind. most times I have to arrange a tie the conversation goes:

Opponent : I normally play on a Tuesday morning. How does this Tuesday at 10 am suit you?
Me: I work 9-5 during the week. It'll have to be a weekend preferably or an evening match.
Opponent : How about Wednesday at 10am?
Me: ????

I don't mind playing it. I'm just not very good at it

Actually, I'm going to change what I said to, no, I don't like singles matchplay. I haven't entered the club singles matchplay for the last 3 years so that must tell me something, the only matchplay I enter is our society one and I played my first (and last as it turned out) round last week. I distinctly remember not looking forward to it like I would a strokeplay.

For me, the whole point of playing golf is to shoot the lowest score I can, that is my aim everytime I go out, it's me against the course. I think I struggle to change this mentality for matchplay and as a result, I don't enjoy it as much. If I play well in a match and win my overiding emotion is that it is a shame it wasn't a qualifier. If I get beat, I'm happy if I played well. When I got beat 4&3 last week, I was happy because I was under handicap, losing didn't bother me at all and it is actually a relief that I don't have to play the next round.

If I had a choiceof comp, this would be my order of preference

Medal
Stableford
Bogey\Par
Pairs Medal\Stableford
Greensomes
Pairs Matchplay
Singles Matchplay
Foresomes

I know that feeling. The best one I had was a couple of years agao in a mixed singles matchplay which I qualified for by finishing well in a monthly medal. I told my opponent that over the next 6 weeks I could do most evenings, and any morning at the weekend that didn't clash with a comp which ruled out 3 days I think. She came back with a choice of two days, both on a Sunday at 4pm!

Love matchplay. I've only ever played 2 proper competitive matches and lost them both but I enjoy the format. I love how it can to-and-fro so quickly and, having gone to 5 extra holes in a recent Winter League match, I love how fine the margins can be between winning and losing.

A bit of variety is always nice. You don't have to take it too seriously, and it is a good way to meet different people in the club. Had some of my best rounds in matchplay, when you can be more aggresive than in a medal.

Love matchplay, have played 10 doubles games in last 15 months and only lost 1 which was the final of the winter league last week
We are current knockout doubles winners and we gel very well together, if one of us is not involved in the hole you can be sure the other one is.
Another mate who plays at Retford reckons I only do so well in matchplays is I can bash it around a bit, I do like that one can take a risk shot (ie cut the corner, 230 yard carry over water shot etc) and the other can back up if it goes wrong
Got to admit though, after playing doubles all winter and winter league going on so long I a looking forward to a few singles games in the next few weeks

Absolutely love matchplay especially foursomes - missus and I had a mixed match last night - giving away nine shots - I'd barely holed a putt of any length this year but I was draining fifteen footers and needed to - I'm not a good golfer, don't get time to play enough, but I am very competitive when playing a match, I've won loads of matches because I want to more than the guy I'm facing.
