Divisions In Competitions

that's if the css is level. even if he's off 25 for the next comp. if he plays the same hell shoot 42 points during his next comp. a ten handicaper would have to shoot 3 over when the 25 handicap only has to manage a 19 over.

it would take 3 or 4 comps for him to get to a realistic handicap. meanwhile his mate who is off 28 has some lessons and shoots a 45. and around we go again.

what I'm saying is its almost impossible for a low handicap golfer to win against a high handicap golfer on a good day. my playing partner who was off +1 shot a course record of - 8. he got 43 points and some 6th!!!!!!!! how's that's right? divisions keep it more interesting imo

Mmm, see where your coming from.

Better to have a mix of competitions, some with divisions and some without, some scratch, some with net h/c etc.

I've always seen divisions in a similar light to that of other sports that have leagues, such as rugby, hockey, squash, football etc.
When players progress/regress they move up/down through categories of handicap and therefore compete at that level.
If you don't have the divisions within the same competitions it will land up being a Div. 1 or Div. 3 only competition etc.
But I do like to see a few trophy competitions that don't have divisions in the yearly calendar.

the other point is - people "protecting" their handicap to stay in a higher Division...

It's better to have it that everyone is striving to improve their standard and their handicap.

As an ex H/C sec. I used to have some tricky conversations with gents holding a club h/c of 12 when I find they are shooting gross 72-74's in the weekly roll-up with their pals!

I remember this being said "just keeping it fair so I have a chance in the knockout"... erm...

not really. a 28 handicaper quite often has a good day and shoots 45 points and finish 19 over. off a 10 handicap you'd have to shoot level par to beet him. alot less likely to happen.

no divisions at our place despite overwhelming requests from members. as a result its rare that single figure golfers play in the comps.
So how do they maintain their H/cap's...... or not switch Clubs?
We split at 15 but still too high to give Cat 1's much of a chance in Stablefords & on top of that the Club pays out the 2's Club in Divisions as well.... can't have good golfers winning Div 2's money

most of them hand is supplementary cards or play comps on the pga course as its hard as nails off the whites. never usually see more than 38 points come in

We have 3, 0-10, 10-18 and 18+ iirc.

Prizes for overall winner (Net and Gross) then winner of each division gets a few quid aswell.

Iain, it's 0-10, 11-15 and 16-28. Prize for overall net winner and then first and second of divisions get something.

Ladies comps. Some are split into two divisions and some into three. I have no idea why it's not the same for each one.

Two's are not split into divisions and can't see why they should be.

Rare at ours that a high handicapper will win the mens comps. It's usually those at 15 and under. We also have a lot of single figure men at ours.

We have two divisions, 1-14 and 15-28. Haven't had a two's pot for a few years as it was changed to best front and back 9's with no split for divisions in that.
