Hi guys
Have just been to a fitting at the Belfry and had a very enjoyable 2 hours trying different clubs and shafts. I am a 14 handicapper who can play single figures when scoring well. Generally score in low 80s. I have a smooth swing and have been told I have good tempo. Tried the following clubs – Titleist AP1, Titleist AP2, Ping G15, Ping i15, Mizuno JPX800, Mizuno JPX800 pro, Taylormade Burner 2.0. Tried these clubs with various shafts. The clubs that showed the best combination of ball speed, smash factor and dispersion were the AP1s and the JPX800, but the AP1s just felt better to me and when I caught it right went the furthest and had the lowest spin rates. I was told based on my swing speed – varied between 85-90mph (generally it was about 86mph) with a 6 iron that I was between regular and stiff. In the end the best shaft was decided to be the Nippon pro 150t in regular (110g). This was based on how it felt to me when striking the ball and visually looking where the ball went (I am coming from graphite shafts weighing 55g!) and also based on the results on the computer ie smash factor, dispersion etc. The heavier and stiffer shafts just didn’t feel as good to me and the results were that my swing speed dropped to about 82mph with the stiffer shafts and I lost 5 or so yards in distance – smash factor also dropped quite a bit – it was only 1.30 to start with. The balls leaked more to the right with stiff as well and I rarely flushed one.

I am 6’1” and have quite long arms so the results showed +1/4 inch in length. I currently have +1/2 inch so these will be shorter. We tried +1/2 inch and I did shank a couple so the fitter decided +1/2 inch was too long. I strike my balls out of the heel consistently – but he told me I was setting up off the heel end – whilst trying the +1/2 inch I tried to tee up nearer the toe and the strike was more central – but then the ball position varied with this length as I had swung differently! Lie was std.

So the recommendation was Titleist AP1, Nippon pro 150t regular shaft (most similar to the Nippon pro 1050 gh I believe), +1/4 inch length, std lie, midsize golfpride multicompound grips, 4 iron to PW.

I felt happy with this, but a mate is insistent that I should go for stiff shafts and says the Nippon’s are for girls! He asked if they recommended pink pinnacle balls as well! He is totally obsessed with stiff shafts and has all these exotic shafts in his set – but he plays off 7 and I am off 14 (although he has a similar swing speed I believe). He says I should go for another fitting somewhere else to see what they say – but this is getting expensive. But I found the stiffer shafts to be shorter and to have worse dispersion. I tend to hit fades with my long clubs and slight pulls with my shorter clubs so I think I should err on the softer rather than stiffer option which would only make things worse.

So my question is, based on my results, do the recommendations seem reasonable? Based on my swing speed (86mph) and smash factor (1.3) with a 6 iron (using range balls) does the 110g steel regular Nippon sound about right? With range balls the 6 iron was going between 156-160 yards. I am used to hitting my current 8 iron about 150 yards.

The reason for the new clubs is to get rid of the 55g graphite regular shafts in my r7 cgb max – The dispersion is terrible with them – huge variation in both distance and spread. They are also a bit chunky for me now – best round is 13 pars, 3 bogeys – but then had two disasters on 17,18 ! doh! For an 80 (par 71, SSS72, CSS72).

Any reassurance would be great as would any issues you can spot! Many thanks.

I am no expert, but I suspect your friend may have problems in other areas of his life? His obsessions might worry me!

Nippon are lighter shafts however if that's what you have been fitted with then and you were happy with the results, you were happy with the fitting then I would 100% trust the fitter not a mate who is probably just jealous!

Why go for a fitting and not buy what is recommended????

I'm not sure how to say this, but here goes.............

Why would you listen to a mate who plays off 7 and likes hard/stiff shafts, when you could listen to a pro who is trained and knows his stuff?

If the guys at the Belfry say thats what you need,if you are not going to take their advice why bother going for a fitting, listen to them not your mate(they should know)...

ditto

what more is there to say!

on a lighter side, in response to your mate, stiff shafts should only be given to girls.... :o

Whilst I don't want to go off topic on my own thread, I am now a little concerned that my mate wants me on the course with a stiff shaft in my hands.....

There are usually some pretty good responses on here but that takes some beating. I am still wetting myself. In fact it is raining pretty hard outside

Sounds good to me.

Never mind recommendations, why go for a fitting and not choose the setup that worked the best for you? The evidence is right there in front of you, the stiffer shafts didn't work, so why listen to what your idiot mate says? I can't believe the OP is even considering listening to his mate's advice when he knows the stiffer shafts produced poorer shots?

My mate didn't say get stiff shafts (well he sort of did) he just thought I should be and suggested going for another fitting somewhere else. He didn't suggest stiff without another custom fit.

I wasn't just going to go against the custom fit.

Only been playing for a couple of years so it's all a bit new - sometimes you do listen to your mates who have been playing for years.

He tends to go to custom fittings on a regular basis but each to their own and he certainly has money to burn.

I take it one custom fit is usually enough?!

...and he's not 'an idiot' as has been suggested. He's just making sure I make the right choice.

But am glad some of you have confirmed I should just go with the recommendation.

Cheers

I swing a bit faster than you and I use regular shafts in my irons. I assume that you would definitely go for stiff in your driver?

Have you a smooth tempo?

If so, your fit sounds good to me. Coming from graphite lightweight shafts, the Nippon is a decent step up in weight and is a nice smooth shaft.

Mizuno have a shaft optimiser which gives you suggested shafts based on 3 swings. It looks at speed, tempo, toe down and release. All are important in determining flex, and you are your mate are probably different in more than one of them.

You may well suit stiff wood shafts, but that is often the case.

Trust the fitter.

How far is The Belfry from you? Would you he able to go back and try a six iron in stiff and in regular and make a decision there and then. At least that way the little bit of doubt gnawing away at you would go away. If it's a hassle just order what the fitter recommended.

What confuses me is that you current 8 iron goes 150 yards. Is that with roll and was the figure you were getting for the 6 iron just carry?

Enjoy the sticks I've got the AP1s with project x's and love them.

I have a smooth tempo and thought the fit was spot on - I personally don't have any doubts in the fitting. The stiff just felt wrong and even by sight you could see the results just were not as good as with the regular shaft. I think the change from the lightweight graphite to stiff steel would just be too great and do more harm than good. Maybe I can reassess in 12 months time or after I've had a few months to get used to the clubs.

I just wanted to double check after what my mate says.

I did have regular in my driver but changed to stiff and this has certainly helped my driving.

The current 8 iron at 150 is what I will take on the course generally from the 150 marker - but the r7 cgb has much stronger lofts - the launch angle on the 6 iron was 2 degrees lower with my set than the AP1. ALso they are graphite shafts and the irons have a thin titanium face so the ball goes a mile. Can even get my 9 iron 150 yards if I try! But the graphite shafts bend as if you're swinging a soap on a rope !

My 6 iron during the test went 162 on average, the AP1 6 iron 155 to start with but once I got use to it it was up to 160 yards - these were all carry. I just ignored the total distance.

Cheers
