Bucky
Club Champion
Only a day or two ago I was congratulating someone on here for breaking 90, whilst saying that I was still waiting for the breakthrough. Well yesterday was that breakthrough. Rolled up to the course to play my usual oneball, went in to pro shop at 12:45 and the next available tee time was 2:20. This meant I spent about 30 mins on the range going through my clubs, followed by nearly an hour on the putting green and in a bunker. As i went up to the first tee, a 2-ball had just teed off and so I hung back a bit because I wasnt ready to be rushed through them if they offered.
Anyway, I 2-putted for a nerve settling par and saw the 2-ball waiting at the 2nd tee for the group in front to hit their shots. I casually remarked that it was going to be a long day, and they offered me to join them as a 3-ball which I accepted. as we went through the usual pleasantries I explained I didnt have a handicap ( never have) and have only been playing since April and am averaging around 93 but not broken 90 yet, and that id just parred the 1st.
Well two holes later and my card reads Par-Par-Par and i'm outplaying both of them (one a 10HC one 25HC) and I started to get really embarrassed. I am new to playing with people other than my mates, and am reasonably aware that there are a lot of people who become 'suspicious' at such uncharacteristic form. It got to the point that every good shot I hit made me more uncomfortable and I kept saying - trust me guys, the collapse is just around the corner! self defeatist or what! Of course i then Double bogied the par five 4th. More doubles followed on 6 and 7 and went out in 43 (still my best).
I wont continue the hole-by-hole but I came in with a 45, which meant i shot 88 (72) and am absolutely chuffed to bits. The guys (Adam and Ian) where as nice as you could hope to meet and don't think I would have met people like that in any other sport. They were helpfull and gave advice as well as quickly telling me not to worry what they thought and to just play my game. the 10HC (Adam)complimented my ball striking saying that if I continue to work on my short game my HC (if i ever get one...) will drop like a stone (read 'backstryke' thread for more on that).
All in all one of my most enjoyable golf experiences, certainly when not playing with friends, and walked away with a massive skip in my step. I even putted quite well, holing a few that I wouldnt normally dream of making.
Thanks to Adam and Ian for welcoming me into their group, offering me a lift home and Adam signed my card for me so there is 1 to go to the collection!
Now, if only i hadnt been so embarrassed/inhibited by my early good form - who knows what might've happened!?
Can't wait to get back out on Monday...
