When I started this wonderful game, the first thing I did was to have a few lessons down the range. During this time I was down the range several nights a week buying baskets of balls and trying to get some sort of swing going.

After a while I got the hang of it. The 100 yard marker was a doddle to land near with most of my mid and short irons.
Piece of cake this golf lark.

My first foray onto a golf course was a grand reality check. Fat shots, thin shots were severely punished. 100 yards out, simple, play my regular accurate range shot..... what's happened?

Not easy is it?

After playing some time at my course I made a few visits to my local range (last winter) Almost every time I visited I seemed to leave feeling depressed due to slicing, hooking, topping and thinning many shots.

Have to say, I haven't been down the range since last winter, obviously due to having the course at my disposal. However, now the dark nights are returning I think it may be time to start going back just to keep the swing in check. This time though, I'll be visiting with a plan in mind and not just smashing balls as far as I can (Total waste of time and money really!)

Think I'm going to concentrate with the driver and long irons. I don't really find chipping and pitching off a mat beneficial tbh.

Weeknight visits to the course will a non starter obviously. I am still hoping to make it up there on a weekend just to keep the ball striking off grass fresh in the mind and body.

Anyone else have similar plans?

Lots going on in my life at the moment so the opportunity to play at weekends may be limited or a last minute thing. I think I'm going to use the range to get rid of some anger and frustrations short term and then work on the change my pro started on Thursday to stop the lifting motion in my downswing.

Of course there has to come a time when range work is taken out on the course and it'll be interesting for sure. I agree that chipping and pitching isn't indicative off a mat so I tend to use a few pitches to loosen up and them move into fuller shots with my wedges.
