Could you live without golf?

Yes, i often wonder why i play anyway. I guess its the people. Golf is just a reason to meet up, and spend a few hours together. I have met a lot of my friends through golf, and it remains a link, that gives us common ground. As to the game? Yes, it wouldnt worry me if it didnt exist from tomorrow, but if it still did, i would still want to play it, because of the people.

Yes, and I did for over ten years whilst I played tennis. If it hadn't been for tennis elbow I would never have taken up the game again.

Would miss my golf friends more than the game if I gave up again.

I found golf the ideal may be spend the day when I retired so I would be at a loss if I had to stop playing, I really don't fancy taking up bowls.

Played the first Saturday of January and at Cleveland just over a week ago, not really fussed about when I go out next.

If someone stole my clubs I'm not sure I'd bother to replace them.

That's how I felt after 18 holes with Huds

Nah, I'd go a bit odd probably. Like anything, I could walk away but have zero intentions of doing so - it's been a part of my life for 30+ years and I'm damned glad it is. Vice captain this year and very much looking forward to giving a bit back to a club and membership that has been very good for me.

If I didn't play I'd have more time to learn my banjo (cripes, I'm crap on that thing) but alternatives would possibly involve shooting or most likely sailing which I'd like more time for.

Whilst still playing it I'd say yes but like football, which I played from the age of 7 I never thought I could do without it but haven't missed playing football at all - which massively surprised me. Although I did replace it with golf. I guess I'd replace golf with something else to pass the time.

yes i could if it got to the point where i wasn't enjoying it.

I always thought that i'd never give up cricket but half way through one season about 8 years ago i was fielding and though to myself "what on earth are you doing here?" and even though i was scoring lots of runs i found it boring. after the game finished i told my team mates that i was packing it in and gave away best part of £1K of kit.

Absolutely. Plenty of other activities or passtimes that could make up for it.

I do actually feel quite sorry for those people who feel that they couldn't live without golf, or any other hobby for that matter, and how limited\restricted their lives must be. Not criticizing and if that's the case then it's great that you at least have golf in your life.

I could live without it and have had 10 year sabbaticals before. However, at this point in my life, I would rather not live without it. A new club has renewed my enthusiasm for the game and I really love golf currently.

I stopped playing three years ago after over 50 years of playing and working in the sport.
Surprisingly, I don't miss it at all.
I hill walk/ramble in the winter and play lawn bowls in the summer.
Enjoy the bowls which I find is much more friendly and inclusive than golf.
I am also a keen gardener and wildlife watcher so I am kept busy doing the things I like to do.

Had a bad shoulder injury a couple of years ago and was confidently told by the surgeon I would never play golf again!

Made me contemplate what would happen and I decided I liked the golfing environment and it was a great way to get outdoors and walk in some pretty special places.

So I qualified as a referee, did some marshalling on the European Tour and helped out with the junior section. However, what hurt more than anything was not being able to play with friends on a warm summer day. I would really miss that and it made the rehab I had to do worthwhile.

So it's not that I couldn't do other things - it's just that I prefer to play golf and be involved with the sport.

Right now I'd say yep no problem. I haven't played for a while and I'm not really missing it, but as soon as the weather and courses improve and I'm back out loving it again the answer might be different.

Anyone that could live without golf should be instantly banned from this forum :D

Don't really have a choice. My life isn't compatible with a game that demands so much time and money.

I still love the game, but opportunities to play it are few and far between.

I had to face up to this and more after my accident in 2014. Golf was always a "target" to keep me motivated in my rehab.I even bought a set of graphite shafted senior flex GI clubs as a carrot to keep me working towards my goal. I finally managed to get back on to a course last spring. Whilst the golf is very different to what I played before I still have that urge to try and go out and play better the next time. It's in the blood.

I did give up for 5 years, when work & study got in the way.
But now I play more and enjoy it more than I ever did.
