cornwall golf advice

St Enodoc, Trevose and St Mellion are expensive but the best in Cornwall. Carlyon Bay is close.
If playing St Mellion don't take a buggy on the Nicklaus course (it will add 1/2 hr to the round) although the Kernow is hillier.

For a pleasant, friendly track try Porthpean (Near St Austell). Not a tester but in good nick with beautiful views towards Carlyon Bay.
PS. Remember, Cornwall does not accept outsiders' County Cards

has anyone played that course in Newquay just behind Fistral beach? I walked past it this summer and though that all the holes seemed incredibly close together. Looked a nightmare for shouts of "Fore" all through the round.

Might seem like that looking in but it doesn't play like that.

I really like Newquay, some of the best bunkering I've seen and always in good nick.

Although, just to show how wet it's been, even they had to put temp green and one shortened hole in recently!!

I'll vouch for Carlyon bay used to be a member there and is a decent Track and well looked after.. Porthpean is ok but out of the 3 In the St Austell area it's the worst out of them all but the views are cracking there

As i mentioned in another thread, got a week's golf in Cornwall coming up. (Two weeks today - yippee). Some good suggestions in this thread. We're staying just outside Perranporth. So the question is; is St Mellion worth the drive back up the A30 (and 100 notes)?

I suppose as a one-off it's worth the money to play SM but I've played it a few times and wouldn't pay that amount again. It's the type of resort course that has offers on, you may be able to find some sort of deal.

£100 can't be right, we did 2 rounds with dinner B&B with a round on the kernow for £160 odd.

I love the course I think it's brilliant, but you shouldn't have to pay more than £50odd!

West Cornwall, Trevose, St. Enedoc are great links experiences

West Cornwall is dangerous, you need a tin hat to play there and Trevose is massively overrated. St Enodoc though is an absolute must play course.

There's no doubt Trevose is overrated but I've always enjoyed it, I've played it a lot as we used to stay in constantine bay quite often. its a good course
in a superb location and for me its just the stretch from 12-15 that lets it down,
They usually do reasonable twilight deals.
Its definately worth a trip.

I'd like to but I haven't played Perranporth, heard its a bit of a Marmite course though.
A bit Quirky..lots of blind shots etc. Sounds good to me.

St Enodoc - Day out in Padstow and get the ferry over to Rock with a carry bag. Its a few minutes walk to the Clubhouse.
It Beats driving all the way round the Estuary

guys - got a 2 week trip planned with the family in August, and managed to get agreement from the fun police that I could take my clubs with me - staying right near the bottom, in a place called perranuthnoe.

So, where should I play?

Cheers, Rob

If you're being well behaved :D and only spending half a day or so away from the family, Mullion is a definite course to play nearby, likewise West Cornwall for another old Cornish links and Tehidy for an old Cornish parkland.

Further afield, St Enodoc is definitely worth playing as everyone says, and for me Perran(porth) is a must-play to really savour Cornish cliff-top links at its most quirky and traditional.

Having played it several times, it depends for me what you want out of the day.

If you want to say you've played a Nicklaus true Championship course that has hosted the European Tour, yeah go for it. It'll be in great condition and anywhere within sight of your handicap will be a great achievement.

If you want to just enjoy a pleasant round of golf whilst on holiday, I would personally avoid it like the plague. Just my view but it's not somewhere I would play for fun, I don't want to be losing balls every time I hit it off line. It's a true tournament course, not really my idea of fun.
