Consistency

Looking at what the low cat1 guys at my course do, they all hit balls, practice wedge shots and then practice putting before their round starts. More than coincidental that these guys are consistently carding competitive rounds in the low 70s.

There's a difference between practising and warming up IMO. I very seldom practice before a round but I always warm up, even in the dark, as long as I can see the ball at my feet it doesn't really matter where it goes as all I'm doing is loosing the swing muscles up.

Since moving to my new club on Jan 1st, I've played to my handicap twice (started at 10.8 now 12.3)

Consistency is my key issue, take yesterday for example......

Front nine, 4 no returns and 12 points.
Back nine, 8 pars, 1 bogey and 23 points!!! With a missed 2 footer for birdie on a par 5.....

How on earth do you do that, especially when our back 9 is much tougher than the front nine....

Last Friday at another course, front nine started with a double bogey and then proceeded to get 22 points on the next 8 holes... Back nine, 10 points in the first 4 holes, 32 points after 13 holes, walked off 18 with 33!!!

Oh well, it'll come together soon, hopefully!!! Ha ha.....

Practice!

Every golfer is capable of stringing some good golf together. It's the 18 holes that kill most club golfers

Not really, we tee off at 7:30, I was there at 6:45 but it was still dark....ish.

I always struggle with our first 2 holes, neither if which are difficult either, I think the last time I had more than 2 points on those two was my only level par round. I also struggle with our 6th and 7th, think I need to play those 4 holes over and over until I can play them......

This week the fog didn't lift until half way down the 6th....

Turn those 2 holes into a couple of Par 5s and tee off with a 6 or 7 iron, or whatever will get you 150 yards down the middleish. Even if you mishit those clubs you won't end up in the cack. Then play to the font of the green, or if there are bunkers short of them, then chip on and look for one putt and accept 2. If it's 3 so be it, lots of people 3 putt their first hold because they get the first putt speed wrong, so it's normal. Then do something similar ish on 2 and you are away.
You'll be amazed how often you walk off bogey bogey or bogey par, which is handicap anyway.

good luck :)

I played at Harpenden Golf Club today, which is a pretty good track. I was 4 over gross for 20 points for the front nine, but only scored 11 points for the back nine, made up of 3 nett birdies, one nett par and 5 blobs!

At some point in the round I will hit the self destruct button.

I actually missed you hitting your self destruct button yesterday as it was the same hole I had to hit two provisionals. Odvan was doing something similar. Lol So easy to rack up a number on links. I was facing a 5footer on the 3rd for a triple before I knew it. Lol

Great fun though.

I always struggle with our first hole because it's a damn difficult 229yd par 3. Well that's what it says on the card, in my head it is a short Par 4 with an outside chance of birdie.

Jeez, I haven't even left yet, anyone would think I never existed
I'm sorry do we know you, welcome to the forum.

dont worry he's only picked me as I get more shots than you. Lol :)

Trust me, you won't be forgotten and we'll renew the orginal dream team for the Nike at Blackmoor next year. I was going to ask you for a last hurrah but wasn't sure you'd still be a member come finals day
cheating on me already.

Mate, of all the emotions I experienced in that mad 5 minutes or so I'm pretty sure fun wasn't one of them.

The problem with being consistent is improvement is near impossible.

The only way for progression is to be inconsistent from a higher base competency.

In other words you should not work on making everything the same but just work on making your bad shots better and let the great ones follow!
