Club Yardages

Caveat this by saying I have just changed every iron inc wedges from 4 down but....

for my old clubs, 7i was my anchor point decent swing in normal conditions was 160yds, one club lower = roughly 10 yds e.g. 8 iron = 150yds and vice versa

I do this first then factor in wind, slope etc.

I did wedge yardages last summer in a lesson from fairway into green with a laser so I had rough yardages for 1/4 1/2 and 3/4 swings with 3 wedges (i.e. 9 distances) = these i had on a card in my scorecard holder

I plan this winter to do iron yardages for my new pings on GC2 and somehow re-do my wedge yardages with new clevelands

I use a small chart front for summer, reverse for winter. the average yardages were from 10 balls with each club, I had it laminated so it slips nicely inside my scorecard holder. I adjust clubbing based on this and weather conditions, if only I had the skill to hit them repetitiously.

I know roughly how far a decently hit 7 iron will go in average conditions on a level course. So I gauge the distance, add a bit on or take a bit off depending on wind, elevation etc. Then guess.

At my standard of golf that's as good as it need be. The difference between a chunked shot and a thinned shot could easily be 70-80 yards. So why worry.

Memory. Can't actually believe I'm reading some of the stuff ref having full and half shot distances written down etc.

Summer yardages are pretty easy. Winter I'll start off with what I think is right based on my usual distances then work it out after a few shots as I get used to how the ball is flying on the day. Suppose I could go on the practice ground first but.... nah, too cold.

Some of the best players have yardages written on some clubs - McIlroy , Woods even Faldo did

I've done a lot of rounds to compile this,

Memory. How hard can it be to remember 14 numbers?

Another question for you guys:

What's the right level of precision four you when it comes to club yardages? Do you round up/down to 5 yard increments? 10?

When I was watching Mark Crossfield I noticed he would say something like e.g. "this is my 142 yards club", and would always think this doesn't make too much sense. I get he probably hits a gazillion shots on GC2 and just takes the average, but I'm quite sure if he'd hit 10 shots on a course and measure them, at least 8 would go to other yardages.

So, how precise is precise enough for you? For me as a high handicapper 10 yards (or rather meters) is more than enough, it's hard enough to consistantly hit it to that yardage.

I had a ssession on one of those devices they use on the telly when commenting on a major etc. It gave me my shortest average, average and longest average with carry. I made up a card for my score card hloder reflecting these so In could check whilst on a course.

Although I had a good idea of these it gave me confidence. I also use a Garmin S1 and a Bushnell range finder which I find the later does help enormously. These are good devices in near perfect conditions and great on away days and tours.

However I still need to take wind direction, lie of the ball, temperature and swing on the day though.

I have no proof of this being untrue (apart from not noticing anything written on Tiger's clubs) but where do you get this info from?

I find it very hard to believe.

Pretty sure Rory marked his grip so he knew how much go grip down to take some yardage off.

Don't think he has actual yardage written on them. its you caddies job to know.

Their livelihood and golf being their career means they have to be as close to 100% correct as possible so that is, fair enough IMO. However, the likes of us hackers needing to know in that detail is silly IMO. No way someone playing off 19 can actually replicate a swing every time to play his (for example) 8 iron, 150 yards, every time. Knowing roughly is all we need. If I'm 150 yards out, my target is the green. In some cases that could differ front to back by 20 yards so I only roughly need to know a club that covers that distance. I wonder sometimes just how serious some on here take the game?! Also, playing the same course week in, week out, surely you'd learn what club from where you are, which club for the par 3's etc and adjust according to weather etc? Just my view. I could tell you my rough yardages per club now, if I could hit them to that +\- 10 yards, I'd be happy.

I was just wondering how you guys keep track of your club yardages i.e written down, memory? Also what yardage gaps do you work to between clubs and what adjustments do you make depending on the weather?

Surrey national do a flight scope session where they gap all your clubs and do some sort of tag for your bag with all yardages. Think it's about 25.00

I'm looking to have a gaping session today somewhere if I can as the weather is horrific, hoping I can go down to AG as that's where my new clubs just came from and use their Flightscope or whatever it is down there they use.

Has anyone done this at an AG and if so, what did it cost, if anything?

Look maybe at the other side of things. If you did things more professionally would you drop your handicap quicker? If you took your average club distance and measured the shot would you hit more approach shots closer? Golf is a game of accuracy and the only way you improve at it is by getting more accurate, be that long game, short game or putting. If you are guessing all the time the yardage and the club hitting distance you've only got to be 12 yards out with the guess and you're at least a club short and if you under club you're then 25 yards short - if you measure things properly it's more than likely you'll only be short because your swing wasn't executed well

At West Hill and with new clubs in-hand I looked and took the the yardage for the back of the greens when it was comfortably in range, I said to myself if I flush this it will be at the back, if I don't get it fully which happens mainly with all handicap golfers or we think we can hit it further than we can all the time, it will be in the middle, if I don't get it cleanly and its weak which again is a common fault of all golfers, it will be at the front of the green, this way I should still carry all the hazards that are predominately at the front of a green, I hit 85% of fairways and 33% GIR giving me the 38 points I got and leaving still quite a few out there where I deliberately laid up, I only found 1 greenside bunker!
