That's another flaw in the system. Shot a 10 over at a local (imo) much easier course than mine and it gave me a differential of 6.9. The same differential at my course would be about 8.5. So if I wanted a lower handicap I could just switch courses

That's a big difference and I am surprised that the "harder" course is easier.

Actually just checked. Had 2 10 overs at my course, score differentials of 9.3 and 9.6. The other course is longer but wide open.
Also play with a lad from ganton off 2 or 3 due to differentials. He normally shoots 7 or 8 over round there and gets no where near his handicap on other courses.

Ours was yesterday. One round - the 33 entrants having qualified via previous comps.
The winner (HI 8) took 73 strokes.

Last year the better players all had stinkers and the winner (HI 19) had the round of his life with 82.

A 19 handicapper won your club championship ???? quality

Ours is 36 holes over a Saturday and Sunday, it was won with round 1 score of 77 and a round 2 score of 72 (73.1/138) by a guy off +1.

I played in the same group in round 2, it was quite an eye opener to see where our games differ. Driving and putting we were similar but his shots into the greens were night and day better than mine!

80 players on Day 1, only one person to break 80, he shot a 76 (par 72)

The greens were running at 11 on the stimpmeter

Day 2 and 76 was also the best return, with four scores of 100 or more, from the 21 that played the second day.

To put the difficulty of the course into perspective 196 was the highest return over two day (52 over)

That's what Strokes Gained would tell you as well. The biggest differentiator in handicaps is nearly always driving and approach shots from 120+ yards. I'm on a good run over the last 6 rounds or so playing to better than a 5 handicap and if I check my Strokes Gained in Shotscope it tells me that to compare to a scratch golfer I need to drive the ball better, be much better from 150+ yards and out of bunkers. Everything else has been comparable or even better to a scratch golfer.

I play a lot with a lad that is usually a +2 golfer. I think it's actually helped my game loads this year just watching how he gets around the course, how he plays when he doesn't have his best stuff and just his mindset overall.

Isn't that a reflection on his game though rather than the course rating/slope?

I've found that my handicap seems to carry well to other courses that I've played this year. I haven't played many but I'm usually around handicap or better if I'm hitting the ball OK.

A club I've recently left has just had the first round of their club championship, the leader scored 82. Second round is today.
Has anyone else been a member somewhere where nobody in the club championships broke 80? I'm trying to understand whether this is unusual or not.
The results speak volumes what has happened at that club in the last couple of years. A winning score of 82+81 on a Par 70 (CR 69) course in virtually perfect weather conditions. The runner up had a course handicap of 19. Last year, the winner had 81+82 coincidentally. That was just after the mass exodus from the clubs competition players. So, two winning scores of +23.

Look back at the scores before that, they were:

2020: +13
2019: +12
2018: +12
2017: +8
2016: +9
2015: +6
2014: +12

Several of those years the weather was atrocious, especially a few in really high winds. And most had a lot of players competing for the win.

FGS STOP DIGGING.

Dunbar East has an awful lot of good players.
You're right we have and it's nothing to do with it being an 'easy' course, indeed the last time it was used as a final qualifying course for Muirfield both Mark James and Thomas Bjorn went on record to say the back nine was the toughest they had played on tour that year, the reason is that it is a quality course that is in great condition all year within round and at a reasonable price, is within easy reach from Edinburgh and so attached good golfers who mostly used it for winter golf, we also have a large contingent from further west and from the Borders

I played against many good Dunbar golfers in the 1960's.
I always found it a tough course to play..
I also have a wee laugh at folk who complain that the wind is a big factor in the difficulty of playing links courses.
They seem to forget that for nearly 50% of the round it is in your favour.
I recall many rounds of out in 33 back in 43. or out in 42 back in 32.
Mind you I once hit a stunning 35 out into half a gale only to lose the plot and come back in 41.
