Chippers...

What I'm saying is that if you can hit a golf shot then you can chip with a 7 or 8 iron instead - what's the difference? Which club do you leave out TipTop? Unless you only carry 13 you have to leave one out to accomodate the chipper

Used to use one when I couldn't chip for rubbish. However, I couldn't get on with it, and learnt how to chip instead.

Mind you a friend of mine swears by his and will use it 20 plus yards from the green if the ground is good.

Problem is it's still one of 14 clubs, which leaves the very open question of what you put into the bag and what do you leave out?

I dont play in competition's so im allowed to have 15 lol i havnt even got my handicap yet either lol.

So what Rules do you play by then?

I take it you play on a flat course, 'cause you wouldn't want to play on a hilly one with the extra weight in the bag. ;)

I use my 7 iron for chipping onto the green. No problems with it.
I've seen the chippers in "certain" shops. Never been tempted to buy as I'm happy with my game as it is, why change?

Nothing wrong with people using them if they want to, just one less club in the bag if they use one!

Competition or not, no more than 14 clubs in the bag. I'd remind you if I counted more than allowed!

There are that many variations in clubs and types of club.

I take what is a basic set of clubs, I use 9iron or 8 iron for chipping, 9/PW/SW for pitching PW or SW for lobbing, I use a 9/8/pw/sw in greenside bunkers.

The point is, you all have whats needed within a basic set of clubs. There is nothing wrong with buying the latest or 'BEST' club for the job or a club you feel cool with, how effectively you use them is whats important.

I have seen them used and I often smile to myself. I can see how they install confidence in new golfers but if people are really struggling that much that they need to resort to a chipper, the money would be better spent on a short game lesson

Hi,

I use a chipper at the moment, I understand some people think they should not be allowed or would not use them , however each to there own , we could not have all these discussions or views if everyone thought the same.
I use a chipper , but then I only carry 8 clubs inc a chipper and putter in my bag.

Cheers

Midnight...

I used a chipper when i first started playing. I found at first it was useful but after much practice and talking to other like minded golfers i found that a 7 iron is much the better way to go. I think i would still recommend them to people who are just starting out with the game but with practice i thimk they will in time find a 7 the better option.

Never used one, but use my rescue club / 5 wood when in thick stuff around the green.

Hey I do that sometimes, I also use it for a lengthy pitch and run depending on lie. Are we odd bods lol ;)

Apparently monty is thinking of going with a chipper.

The only things that will survive a nuclear holocaust are cockroaches and chippers. Chippers lead to a false sense of confidence in the game, how? I hear you ask, well, chippers are like lob wedges, you hit a good one and you think youve got it sussed but then again you only hit them occasionally unlike pitches over bunkers, slightly longer approaches etc.

I will bet good money that noone one here will honestly say that it is their strongest club in the bag, if it isnt the strongest club in their bag then why not practice "normal" methods of chipping and pitching where there is scope for more invention and imagination and get rid of the bad habit that is the chipper, maybe it wont outlive mother earth afterall.

I agree. On form, my 7 or 8 iron chipping is the best part of my game. I play it like a putt (even the grip!!), take a 2p sized clip/divot off the turf, hands forward, no wrist-ies, weight on the front foot. I've chipped in more with these than say a PW or 9 iron. Lovely Jubbly.....

The day Monty or indeed any Pro golfer carries one of these joke clubs in the bag will be the day Scotland lift the World cup in football!! :o

What is the difference between chipping with a chipper, and a high lofted utility?

Obviously in the bag, the utility is way more versatile, but around the greens, not much difference I would say.

If it works for you, fine, but buy a legal one (and not the hideously expensive Cally one, which sits closed anyway).
