Just wondering if anyone (except the fella that joined us the other week) used them?

People say why bother when you can use a 7 for the same thing, but they seem easier than a iron and more like a putter stroke and easier at address to control.

Would you use one?

Never in a million years, a guy in our fourball used one for a while with varying degrees of success, I hated it and always joked about it becoming handy when he gets old as a walking stick.

Parmo, i use my 8 iron but with a putting stroke when i'm just off the greens....

I toyed with one of these "chippers" when my father in-law had one in the bag, it wasnt too bad but for me my 8-iron does the same job just fine.

They are a great help for those struggling with their chipping, or those learning the game. I've got one at home, but don't use it, a 6 iron is just as effective with the right stroke, not to mention there is more flexibility of the way of addressing the ball with the irons over a chipping iron.

Although these special chippers are meant to be used close into the green I've seen one old boy use one effectively from much further out.

So although I'd be embaressed to be seen using oneI wouldn't dismiss the use of them out of hand, if it inspires confidence with the user, though to me it does seem like the waste of a space within the bag.

The missus currently has it in her bag & she's experimenting with it.

They should be banned, they are just horrendous(sp)

They are like the kids devices at the bowling alleys!

A lot of older golfers use them, from anything up to 100 yards and in.

I don't like them, and wouldn't have one in the bag, but each to their own.

Callaway make one for about £80, and Bronty make one for about £15.

I guess it is snobbery, but I would look down on someone using one of these as not being a real golfer.

I tend to use a 4 or 7 iron depending on the shot but this fella (though I did laugh to myself with he introduced me to it) used it to good effect at times, though his was double bladed so he has taken it to the next level, a level I never knew exsisted.

I don't think so if it is classed as a putter (not sure how you qualify something as a putter) and the two faces share the same characteristics (ie: loft / grooves, etc)and are opposite each other.

See appendix II for definition of a Putter.

"A putter is a club with a loft not exceeding ten degrees designed primarily for use on the putting green."

Regarding two faces on a club,

"Striking Faces
The clubhead must have only one striking face, except that a
putter may have two such faces if their characteristics are the same, and they are opposite each other."

There's also the embarassment factor as well!

I had one when I started, saved loads of time getting the ball onto the green instead of a string of duffed chips (so should meet the approval of the speed merchants!). Actually it was quite good from up to 50 yards and it only cost £5 in sports world!

my son's got it now as he's just starting.

as to loft, I think it was about about 37 deg so can't be classed as a putter

as I said elsewhere - a chipper is only a specialised wedge, no different from a gap wedge, sand wedge, lob wedge etc

They are a good idea for beginners who need to practice chipping and pitching and also builts thri confidence, I draw the line in the sand with a hcp of below 23 and uses one.

To be honest anyone who can hit the ball with a club is wasting their time (and a club) with a chipper. If you have a chipper then you've got to leave another club out - assuming you carry 14 and I suppose if you need a chipper you probably can't hit a driver..........

Used to use one when I couldn't chip for rubbish. However, I couldn't get on with it, and learnt how to chip instead.

Mind you a friend of mine swears by his and will use it 20 plus yards from the green if the ground is good.

Problem is it's still one of 14 clubs, which leaves the very open question of what you put into the bag and what do you leave out?
