Chipper purchase...

i dont use one myself. ive had a go with a mates around the 9hole course and it does exactly what it says on the tip. with a bit of practice i think anyone could become a wizard with it. The big golf manufacturers stay clear of them as pros dont use them. if taylor made brought out their new 2012 chipper i believe people would be all over it. its the smaller cheaper brands that make them so theres an elitist side to it. i can see the benefits of these clubs to people starting out and anyone with a 20+ handicap should have one of these in the bag.

Have to agree with this,I used a chipper not long after I started playing and it is a easy club to use, when I got better I used a 7i.

As a experiment I think Tiger should forget his dislike for this club, and get hold of one and use it for 5or 6 rounds,;) wouldn't mind betting he would get better scores.

Why will it improve my driving accuracy, my pitching, bunker play and long range putting? ;) I do find it amusing that a number of you seem to think a chipper is the answer to my prayers when you've never seen me play :o ;)

where is you main weakness? where do you throw away most of your shots?
I've got four and am working on three at the moment on the basis that fixing those three will help the other one.

1. Driving - I hit the ball pretty long and struggle with control at times with Driver/3 wood. Can't hit my hybrid for toffee so on a bad driving day I'm teeing off with my 4 iron
2. Bunkers - need a consistent technique to get out and hopefully somewhere near the flag. Too often stay in, airmail green or get out but not far
3. Pitching - anything between 100 - 50 yards struggle with knowing distances and controlling accuracy (lessons focussing on this at the moment and positive early signs)
4. Long putts - leave them short too often especially when I hit GIR

Those four sins are costing me about 10-12 shots per round. I did have a chipping shocker last weekend but I hadn't played for five weeks and was wearing two gloves (not a fan). Our greens aren't that big so from the fringe I'll chip with a 9 iron. Most of our greens are raised so I prefer to use my wedges from further out.

heres my 2 bob on those things if you dont mind me saying ...

1. driving - try not to hit it as far as you say you stuggle with control. dont try and match any of the big hitters you play with. last summer when i played my nephew, i wouldnt watch him hit as i tried to match his lenght and ended up over swinging and making a balls up. swing within yourself for more accuracy.

2.bunkers- feet out to the left. come in steep and take plenty of sand. the 58 if your close, 54 if further away. follow through. but as you say, a bit of practice at them to nail a consistant technique.

3.try pitching wedge from 100, 50* from 80 and 54* from 50. again swing within yourself. dont overswing. hands slightly infront of the ball will help with a clean contact.

4.putting- a bad first putt is always the main factor in 3 putts. just try and make sure you have enough gas to get to the hole. theres an old saying, theres 4 ways to miss a putt. miss left, miss right, long and short. hit it hard enough and your down to three.

chipping around the green- to judge approximatly how much power you need to give a chip, imagine you are throwing a golf ball underhand to get to the hole. ive been doing this a lot recently and its working a treat.

hope this helps :)

Hey Tiger I was only half joking;) but you never know....

Followed your progress and admire your quest to improve... good luck mate.

Funny you should say that Gary as the driving is the one I'm not working on. I drive best when I'm relaxed and having a tight short game will probably help with that. I've just got new wedges but not had the chance to work out distances yet. My pro is helping massively with partial web swings. very excited about this part of my game. Bunkers...just need practice, technique, practice, technique practice... ;)

As for the putting you are right on the money but again it's practice on grass that I need. Hopefully get more chance to do that in the Spring. All in all very excited about this year

Evahakool you can never tell in this place ;)

ive never heard of partial web swings ? is this like bringing the club back to say, 9 oclock or 11 oclock with the different wedges for different distances? if your making good contact with the ball every time then this method can be very efficient. you just have to factor in wind and slopes etc.

Tiger,

Back in the day of your blogs, weren't you focussing almost all your time at the range and local park to hitting pitch shots and using the Pelz method. I seem to remember you were gettign good results and that the short game was the lynchpin. I knew you had some bunker issues but you hadn't really attacked that area of the game. How come the 50-100 yards has gone so wrong. Lack of practice?

Meant wedge not web swings!!! Blog is still online http://rub-of-the-green.blogspot.com. Distance control was a plus point but changing wedges with new shafts has meant I need time to learn new yardages. Pelz works but takes lots of practice time! My issue was with direction but now tightening that up courtesy of a few minor tweaks to technique. By April things should be back on track. Only played one individual comp this year and won it so a 100% record can't be bad ;)

Perhaps it isn't as bad as you making it sound then and that once you've knocked the rust off yoru game you'll find it'll come back.
