Cancelled membership. Am I liable to pay until end of April?

We have had this on a few occasions with people leaving and owing money and when contact is made from new club word are spoken and somehow there are problems with their membership at new club.

People these days seem to think it's ok to just up and leave with unpaid subs outstanding, membership is a 12 month contract.

Next question would be is if my new club can transfer WHS if I have all relevant information.

Do they need to confirm with previous club first?

I am a member of two clubs. I just got the new club to request the transfer from my old club. The old club had to approve the request so the new club was my official home club

Says I can resign at any time once my 12 months have been completed?

Maybe I’ve read it wrong thinking once 12 months from start of my membership is over, it then goes onto a 1 month rolling contract.

Thats what i believed when reading the T’s & C’s

Have you paid 12 monthly payments (one years subscription)?

Your new club just needs to request the transfer and your old club needs to do this and resign you. All the info will just transfer across.
However if you owe your old club money I believe they can withhold the transfer (I recall there being something like a ‘non financial members’ or something report).
The club’s stance is likely to be that you have agreed to pay for 12 months membership and you owe this money whether you decide to leave, not play or anything else. You have merely chosen to pay what you owe in 12 instalments, the last 2 are still outstanding. Normally it is a 12 month deal not a monthly contract.

So once it automatically renewed at the start of May last year I am locked in for a further 12 months?

If so is that the same with every club?

Those T&C are sketchy at best. It does not implicitly state that renewals beyond "new membership" are binding for any period. It explicitly states that "new membership" is 12 months minimum and after this can be resigned (I assume they mean cancelled) at any point.

The person that wrote these has left gaps you can drive a bus through. If the member was to cancel and the club was to pursue what they deem a deficit then I suspect any member willing to take them to court would win comfortably.

I also assume that the club has a credit license as this is required since the FCA made changes back in, I think, 2017. Which was why may clubs moved to services like Orchard or Fairway Credit. If they are offering payment terms without a license then the member would be within their rights to report them to the FCA.

Will ring secretary of my old club now.

Wish me luck 🤣😉

If they let you go minus last 2 months of the year that sounds like it’d suit you, if not at least you can still enter the comps for the next two months :p

(if its not insensitive… how did the match go?)

25 minute conversation has ended on a very good note with previous secretary.

I am not liable for the further 2 months for anyone wondering. He’s been very good in regards to cancelled membership and said he will miss me.

Door is wide open for a return if things do not work out at new club.

Ran me through the whole process in regards to changing my WHS over which involves changing away club to home etc which he will authorise.

Thanks all

That's what I was expecting. Surprised at the replies saying you'll be liable - nowhere in those T&Cs did it say that

Had me a little bit worried with my relationship with new club with the replies.

I was expecting to be frozen out until payments were paid with me looking like I was some sort of trouble maker at new club hence why I had to make that call.
