• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Can of worms!!! Denim!!!!!!

I can just see it now, the guys turning up in skinny jeans and their arses hanging out of them. Have you ever actually played 18 holes in a summers day with 'denims' on? You must be off your head.

Every body says that golf should move with the times but I say if you don't like the rules, bugger off and join a municiple or find another sport and leave those who RESPECT the rules of golf to play the traditional way.

My rant is over !!!!!!!

if you want to post please read the debate 1st who said on the course ?????

And if you do read the above you will see alot of us share the same point. As do it seems a lot of clubs

A smart pair of jeans is a controdiction in terms.
there is no such a thing.
they may be classed as modern/stylish,but smart never
a pair of stretch jeans on someone like Kylie is worth debating

Right my pennys worth now!!!!

Denim is a no, no on the golf course in my opinion.

Connor, I hear you brother. I cant agree more mate. I would support my Golf Club more during the week if I could pop down in my jeans and a smart casual shirt, I would spend my money on a couple of beers, put a few more of my precious pound coins into the puggy and even more of my lovely shiney silver 50 pence pieces into the pool table. And guess what my golfing buddies would do the same.

In todays day and age where most clubhouses are not making a bar profit its crazy to discriminate against people who will spend money. As it is we end up in the local pup getting a [****] pint just because we can play a game of pool and chill.

I have used this example before, Turnberry allow you to walk about in dirty golf shoes in all areas, they allow you to sit in the lounge with your waterproofs on and even allow caps to be worn in the clubhouse.

Golf courses or more importantly clubhouses need to have a reality check and come into the 21st century.

RANT OVER!

(shudders)

Billyg (@37 years of age) strikes Turnberry from list of clubs to join (or probably even visit) in future.

I think new jeans can be smart (ish) but it's the thin end of the wedge, unfortunately. I would love to go down the club in the eve and enjoy some food and a pint, but I don't go. If this is right or wrong, don't know??

If jeans were ok in the bar area, then some young kids/fashion victims would soon turn up in ripped/stained/hip-hop styleee street wear.....yuk.....a nice pair of 501's is hardly too much of a shock for the older members? But as I said, it's a slippery slope. Then again, I wear a tie to work and my boss doesn't......some customers seem to like his "casual" look, I think it just looks unprofessional, so do a proportion of folk who immediately wipe us of the "potential" list.

Agree with you Connor. Jeans just don't look right on the course, no matter how hard you try. Waterproof trousers look better, for God's sake.

However, given that most clubhouses are simply bar/restaurants I don't see a problem so long as they aren't accompanied by Iron Maiden T-shirts. Fortunately my club agrees with this opinion, so it's jeans allowed in the clubhouse but not on the course. Just the way it should be, in my opinion.

I think even our junior section agree with this. They're happy to feel like golfers on the course and have no problem changing. Happily they NEVER wear shorts on the course, either.

I believe that golf is a sport, much in the same way as running, boxing and soccer are also sports.
When was the last time you saw Paula Radcliffe, Joe Calzaghe or Jamie Carragher partaking in a little sport in a freshly ironed pair of boot cut denim jeans?

Jeans were originally made for rail workers, wranglers and all sorts of heavy duty working environments, these days they are seen as casual pleasure wear. Why would you want to wear these to play golf when you wouldnt wear them to any other sport?
The only dress code I dont agree with is the likes of captains night etc where you must wear a jacket to dinner, how difficult is that when you are having soup for a starter and a rogue lapel trying to dip itself into your spoonful of minestrone or cream of veg with croutons?

brendy, please don't tell me you iron a crease in your jeans. that's like wearing socks with sandals.

out of work and even there on a friday, I wear jeans almost all the time but not on a course or in the club (though it's allowed).

for most clubs the problem is to define what constitutes 'acceptable' - boot-cut, stone-washed are fine with me, tractor jeans, ripped, pre-stained, permanent creased and baggy aren't. the easy way out is a blanket ban.

Jeans come in so many different shades and sizes that it would cause a huge arguement between acceptable and unacceptable. Why not just wear a pair of navy chino's, or if you want to be individual a pair of day-glo Ping troosers.

if the club rule is no denims then it should be abide by.
to may people in this day and age think that because the rule don't suit them then they need to change it and make a noise about it, trousers in golf is traditional and in my opinion should stay like that, there is still plenty of time to wear denims even after work and golf

Mr Homer,

Talk about pot calling the kettle how can you even dare talk about " prejudicial statements " let me just quote you again below-

" I have to say I think denim in a golf club either on the course or in the clubhouse is not on. I want my club to have certains standards otherwise I could join the local municipal and sit with all those golfers who turn up drunk in torn jeans and sleeveless shirts and hack it round in 6 hours without letting anyone through."

As i have already posted there is plenty of players who for whatever reasone can not be part of a club and just because they play at municipal course does not make them all drunks in torn jeans taking 6 hours to play a round.

whats the old saying about glass houses!!!

Personally, in terms of comfort, I can't see the difference between jeans and dockers. One is allowed, one is not. Therefore, wear dockers and there is no problem. They don't have creases, they don't look formal, they are not dry clean only, they are comfortable, they are modern (ish). What is the problem? Why the fixation with 'out of work, must wear jeans?'

To sum up i thank you all (even you Mr Homer) for your input on this matter i have been asked to put a prop to the Committee ref this issue and all the post on here have been helpfull. It seem this will never be black and white however if i had asked this question say 10 yrs ago i think i would of been hard pushed to find one club who would let denim in the CLUB HOUSE NOT THE COURSE.Looking at all the post it would seem well over 50% of club houses are now letting it in so times seem to be changing for the small less well off clubs of which there is many it would seem the writing is on the wall.

Again thank you all very much for you input. :D
