Can I get to scratch?

I've been promoted to Mizuno MX25's... don't know if that'll help or not.. was thinking about getting Region3's Titleist AP2's but £250 is such a rip off

MX25 are good clubs and plenty of very very good players play cavities, but in my opinion I think you'd have far more control with stiffer shafts. I remember they were R300, but can't remember if they were standard TTDG or the lite version?

PM sent about mine ;)

For James's benefit, I'd suggest that any move of club is to one with the SSS greater than Par.QUOTE]

Lost me there - I was under the impression that SSS respresents the score that a scratch golfer should be able to achieve in average course and weather conditions. Whether that score is higher or lower than the par for the course is neither here nor there. It should be just as difficult for a scratch golfer to play to SSS whether it is 74 or 70.

Lights blue touch paper and retreats.

You are correct - and that is the reason.

SSS is based on a mythical Scratch player's 'expectation' - normally pretty close to reality though.

CSS is based on (20% of) whole field (well Cat 1,2,3) - whose average is more likely to be around 12-15.

It is traditionally much harder for a low-capper to score well enough to get cut on a course where they have to be making a birdie or 2 just to make SS. The additional 'headroom' that the extra shots give where SSS is above Par seems to benefit low-cappers a shade more than other categories.

Seems like James might suit long and wide open courses (Wentworth West/Foxhills Bernard Hunt?) slightly more strategic/accuracy oriented ones (Wentworth Edinburgh/Foxhills Longcross) too.

Well bugger me, youre off 6? The way you yitter on here I thought you were already off scratch!

You certainly talk a good game, best of luck getting down.

Ha! I've been lower (2).. I'm old and don't play much. That's the h/cap they gave me when I joined my new club (5.5) as they said they couldn't put me straight in at CAT1  Played 5 comps in 18 months and went UP .1 each time :angry::angry: stoooopid course! :D

True about the SS, it's not nice knowing you've got to make birdies just to shoot your h/cap as it relies too much on just a couple of putts. Copthorne is 71/71 so not too bad... it's just so ruddy tight!

..or just make pars............crazy idea but it just might work

Pars aren't good enough if you're playing a par 71 with SS69, you have to shoot 2 under just to be on h/cap, which means the putts HAVE to drop. The other issue being if the course is SS69 then it's probably short... and short courses GENERALLY have worse greens, it's a double edged sword.

Surely a proper scratch golfer can play most types of courses tho ? , wide open courses are drive & short irons , tight courses would be 3wood /rescue/long iron then mid iron .. having played with a few 2 - 1 & scratch golfers over the years , its their course management that defines them over very good 3 & 4 handicappers..

Depends if you're long enough to tackle 7,200yrd courses with big greens (like you might see on TV) or a tight 6,400yrd tree lined monstrosity with greens like stamps and covered in leaves :)

I joined the latter to make me a better iron player... it hasn't worked yet.... :) LOL

hmm, probably shouldnt be answering this thread and very close to issueing a challenge, however, having had a skinful i should wait till the cold light of day lol. You fancy a race to 2 or 3 James? Sure we can find a bet of somesorts between us if you fancy it (im 6.7 currently, home course is 72/72)

Close to issuing a challenge? you were about 10 words away! :D

You're a 3 h/cap already.... masquerading as a CAT2 player! :ears: and you've already been off 2 if I remember correctly? and now you wanna try and squeeze an injured old man for some cash?.....

how much?
