Can I get to scratch?

Me neither.. will be happy to prove myself wrong too!
Even more of a reason why I don't think you'll do it!

Now while I don't really give a monkey's whether you do or don't, it seems the more time you spend at a golf course the less Sh1te and Twaddle I'll see on here and I'm all for that so get determined and put the hours in - at the course!

I agree, I post a lot of shite that 99% of people here (maybe 100%) couldn't give a stuff about. It helps me though... it's like therapy :ears:

Fortunately we have you and your 10 posts now :)

BTW

Have you got any decent clubs yet?

If you're going to take the game seriously at last, I'm not sure how many scratch players play Vantage cavity back circa 1985.

Joining Cottesmore might help as well.

What an insightful 10th post. If you've read any of James's S&T and ball laws stuff you'll see that some of it makes good sense. Having seen him play and enjoyed his company I can verify that his version of S&T means he can get it round in low numbers. Whether he can do it enough to get to scratch of low single digits is the question. Of course Foxholer the good news is it will stil get dark every night and so poor James won't be able to play then and can still come on here and entertain you as he clearly has so far

I've been promoted to Mizuno MX25's... don't know if that'll help or not.. was thinking about getting Region3's Titleist AP2's but £250 is such a rip off

Thought about Cottesmore.. might go and have a look at the course tomorrow.

Don't do it!

It's only recently that you've started enjoying your golf again, having scratch as a target would have you slinging your clubs in the skip and taking up bowls in no time.

Just carry on playing golf for the enjoyment. :D

James could never play Bowls, as they are not round, and have a built in bias. What laws do they conform too ?:mmm:

I can see a huge potential for new threads on jack & tilt.
Aren't there also shots called a draw and a drive?
God, I'm starting to sound like a right bowls nut. :o

I played bowls once on a boys golf trip to Alderney. We managed to lose a bowl, when it jumped the gutter and went through a small gap at the end of the green. It then dropped down a bank into the biggest load of stinging nettles I've ever seen. Must admit we had had quite a few sherbets, so you can imagine how funny it seemed at the time.

No wonder losing golf balls comes so easily to me.:)

Doh!! And I thought WRX ganged up on newbies! Should I wait until I've notched up 22K posts before expressing a banter laden opinion? As in golf (scores), quality beats quantity every time to. Quantity means better value for money though, so everyone's a winner! If you want to suppress my raves - and the occasional rant - just ignore me.

Entertaining indeed - and the therapy he mentions is what golf forums are all about.

No problem with using any swing method to try and improve, I just object to the proselytizing by devotees - almost as much as to the instant-expert pros who try and make everybody get the club into positions they are incapable of repeating consistently. I've actually read sufficient about S&T to believe it's as valid as any approach though not universally applicable. I believe golf is really a wonderful simple game that too many charlatans make undeservedly good livings at by methods almost as devious as bankers!

BTW. Fancy a small wager as to whether James will make scratch (by October I think it was)?

For James's benefit, I'd suggest that any move of club is to one with the SSS greater than Par. And matching to game might be advantageous too, though shouldn't really matter around Cat 1 level. Might not make a truly better golfer but more 'headroom' for reductions.

That place is more clicky than Roy Castle!

I agree about the SS, the nearest one is 35min drive away and is Par 72, SS 74. It's more expensive though and both fuel and time draining.

I wouldn't bet on me getting below 5.4... actually 7 might have been a better guess

hmm, probably shouldnt be answering this thread and very close to issueing a challenge, however, having had a skinful i should wait till the cold light of day lol. You fancy a race to 2 or 3 James? Sure we can find a bet of somesorts between us if you fancy it (im 6.7 currently, home course is 72/72)

James,
having played with you countless times over the last three years I feel qualified to offer my honest opinion.
You hit the ball a long way, albeit a little wayward from time to time. You are great company on the golf course. Most probably one of the nicest blokes I have ever played with. Always encouraging, and you love a bit of banter. You dish it out, but more imporantly you take it as well. I love playing with you. You are a great laugh. But (there had to be a but didn't there!)....
On a wide open course, where length is the "be all and end all" (say East Sussex National for instance) I wouldn't bet against you knocking it round in level par. Most par 5's are in range for you. You will put a score together even if you stray off the straight and narrow (as you have a tendency to do).
On a tight, tree-lined course where you have to plot your way around, and your length isn't as useful? Nah. You don't do as well. You always seem to struggle. You hit a few bad shots into the trees, and the round becomes "a laugh" for you, and whilst your head doesn't actually drop, you are then just content to be "one of the lads" and oink it round for a laugh. And if I wanted to beat you I have a plan that is guaranteed (guaranteed) to put you off your game. I'd just get the pretty blonde barmaid (best if she is little because I know you like the little ones) to come out as you are about to tee off the 1st, give you one of "those" looks and wink at you. That would be guaranteed to have your mind on what you think you are going to do to her afterwards, instead of concentrating on your golf over the next four hours. "Proper" scratch golfers don't allow that to happen......;)
