Cambridge Golfers- Club Choosing Help

I you are ever short of a game at the weekend you can always drop down the A1 to Belton Park while you sort out a membership. It may be 40 minutes in the car but will only cost you £10-£15 when you get there.

I am a member at Girton and can say for the price that I pay, I think it's brilliant.

The course is normally in good condition all year round, so is closed very little of the course of the year. Decent club house and bar, and the changing rooms are soon to be renovated.

As someone else said, there is a deal where you can play 20 or so other course, twice a year for free.

The other thing that I really like is the driving range (field) next to the car park. 5 Bays, all on grass, bring your own balls and practice as much as you like for free.

Yes the gog is out, I want to join a club almost instantly in January and I need something on the budget end as I am going to be unemployed for a while.

Didn't even see New Malton! Must put that on the list as its really simple to get to and probably that alone puts it ahead or Girton if it is a decent track, so now Bourn and New Milton top my list with others in the "b" pile but will still be looked at of course.

There's a deal on to play New Malton (Living Social thingy...) but read reviews on Golfshake and it gets hammered so decided not to bother...

And we can do a group lesson with Bob on putting and chipping too right?

Anyway thanks all,

I will be popping into Girton, New Malton and Bourn in the new year to compare each. Hopefully I can find at least one that will accommodate my need of wanting to start off 5 day and moving to 7 day when I get a job as well as being close, fun and friendly. Which ever does I will probably end up at.

Hopefully I can blag a few free 9 holes mid week or at least a discounted round or two while I compare and contrast each using strict scientific methods.

When we were looking to move I rather anorakishly kept a spreadsheet and graded every course out of 10 on a number of criteria. The idea being that the winner would be clear from the analysis!!

Criteria: Travel Time, Ease of Travel, Condition of Tees/Fairways/Greens/Bunker, Condition in winter (mats/temps), course layout, facilities: clubhouse, changing, pro shop, practice, Atmosphere, Lady Members (number and standard), reciprocal, cost.

Im married so I wont use that one but the rest is useful, will probably do something similar

:-) Main reason for leaving was a decent amount of partners and competition for me. I still check the handicap lists wherever we go to see if a club has a good number lower than me (which is appealing!).

I am a member at Girton Scienceboy and I have played all the courses in the area.

The only reason I am a member at Girton is that my dad plays there and he likes it as it is very flat, easy walking and not that long for him and we play together quite a lot.
The course can get wet like any parkland and has been closed in bad weather but the quality of the fairways and greens are pretty good year round, tees are sometimes a bit dodgy, a couple of mats in winter, temporary greens on occasions and one of the par 3 is usually out of action throughout the winter with a substitute par 3 hole used.
I would not say it is a very interesting course with no real signature holes, but it is a good test with some tight holes (there are no cross fairways, but you have to cross a couple of holes to get to the next tee.
It does not get too busy even in summer (avoid Tues and Thurs)and there are no tee reservations.
It does a have a few miserable so and so's, but what club doesn't.It has good practice range, but in wet weather this can get unplayable and balls just plug nevr to be seen again.

It is only a five minute drive from my house, so this is the other main reason for playing there but if I was you and if your going to be living that side of Cambridge, if the Gogs is too expensive I would play at Bourn, as it is definitely easier to get to than Girton.Meridien is more interesting than Girton, but not as good on quality of greens and fairways. My favourite is Bourn,it has good mix of holes and is friendly and you can play Girton for free on the smart golfer network. Given the choice and if Bourn was closer for me it would be Bourn every time. All are around the same price for 5 day membership.

New Malton is no good.Menzies, Bar Hill ok, but wrong side of town like Girton

Of course this is just my own opinion. If you ever want to meet up at Girton or Bourn get in touch.

New Malton cropped up on Groupon so maybe a cheap way to go and have a look SB. Deal midweek is 27 holes; £14 for 2 or £25 for 4, valid until the end of February

New Malton has offered me four months unlimited golf for £100, seems the best option for me, just to get some golf in! Lets hope its open most of the time during wet weather.

So far thats the most affordable and best offer.

Just been down to New Malton, massively impressed. Really fits what I want from a club and the course looks in great condition considering the recent weather.

The only down side is the course condition generally is on the lower end of the scale but as long as its playable and interesting I am never that bothered!

The main attraction is the practice and training facilities. Full members get a free lesson a month, unlimited range balls as well as a free group lesson every Saturday for swing checkups.

Its putting green and short game area look great as does the driving range, the Pro is a great guy and the members look a good bunch.

Playing my trial round in two weeks then taking up a trial membership if all goes well.

To sum it up it screams value for money, which as an unemployed person is high on my list!
