I am so desperate to play golf I pretty much NEED a membership when I move to Cambridge in the new year (well its pretty certain...).

I have had a quick browse and disregarding the obvious (gog) which is sadly the closest to where I am going to live (near the hospital), I can see that Meridian and Girton stand out as pretty good choices.

I currently just pop down Cambridge Lakes, the little par 3 off Trumpington Rd for my fix when I am there but once I am a full time, but unemplyed, resident I would like to use my non job hunting time to play some golf!

Can anyone tell me more about either club? What are they like at this time of year (I like to play in the rain and cold) and are they good value for money?

Any information is welcome and thanks in advance

Girton is a nice track, not played it at this time of year so dont know how it holds up to the weather but been in nice condition when Ive played in summer. One advantage at Girton is they are part of the Smart golfer network which gives you free reciprocal golf at approx 25 other courses for free (and there are a few within easy reach of cambridge; bourne, oundle, royston, pavenham).

Is Brampton where Philly is a member not an option?

I will be based on the south side and could be working anywhere where a I find a science job. Brampton is just a little too far away at nearly 40 mins, Girton is just under 20 going through town. I can see getting to or from Girton at rush hour being a nightmare! Still I can work around that when I am unemployed!

The other option is the links club in Newmarket which is the same as Girton but less traffic... Seems to have a joining fee though!

I will of course go round them myself in January but the input of the forum is always appreciated and would be a great help!

nice to see you moving to middle earth.
I was going to suggest bourne which isn't too far away.
for me brampton is ok for an occasional visit, not for long term though.
played oundle once - never again, more cross-overs than your gran's knitting, the 11th and 14th even use the same fairway - in opposite directions!
come to my place or go for a knock round royston sometime, you need climbing boots for that, and very interesting when the wind blows, but I just like it - just masochistic I suppose

I would love to! Just please don't wear purple...

Which course is yours? There seems to be many South West of Cambridge!

A little bit further out you have got longstanton or st. Ives. I play at a course a bit further out Lakeside-side Lodge at Pidley Huntingdon that has three course a 6 hole course a 9hole and an 18 hole friendly club as well

Longstanton seems decent and close.

BTW I went to the Christmas Market at Wimpole Hall over the weekend... The Rare Breeds hot dog was nice...

When I asked what rare breed the lady said "West Highland Terrier"

Bar Hill is Menzies course i think, played it twice in the summer, very nice but very slow pace

Haverhill is nice but probably too far out into Suffolk

Google maps says it's 19 miles from Cambridge to Potton which is where John O'Gaunt is, they have 2 nice 18 hole courses. Is that outside your range?

Courses close to you will include:
Gogs (expensive and waiting list)
Bourne - nice course, par 3 starter is a bit iffy though, nice club house, seems like a nice place
Cambridge Meridian - play there a few times with group on offers, nice course for me to play every now and then after work as its 5 mins away.
Girton - haven't really heard much about, so can't give guidance..

You then start going outside of Cambridge:
Menzies Bar Hill, 5 mins from Girton down the A14 - nice course, decent clubhouse, not sure on membership.
Longstanton - 5 mins from bar hill - open all year, I've never seen it shut. Not the best course in my opinion and if I want to play a round within 30 mins notice with friends normally just rock up and get out. Pretty standard course, not really challenging. No clubhouse so. It sure what membership is like.
Royston and Safron Walden I've heard good things about, though never played, would like to give them ago.
Wyboston Lakes, st Neots - decent course, always been friendly but does get wet quite a lot.
Lakeside Lodge, Pidley - little further out though, next door to me - nice course and friendly team, 6, 9 and 18 holes available but membership isn't that good, it's more discounted green fees. I just use the range nowadays.
Brampton - home course - you've obviously played there and seen the good clubhouse banter and nice course ;) bit out of the way for you though I think.
St Ives - heard mixed reviews, we've had quite a few members join us after a year or two there. Though is Titleist national fitting centre

I think that's all I can think of that I know about...

I'm in the same boat but need a membership nearer Huntingdon. So my options are Brampton, (never played) St Ives( played quite a lot and like but conditions can sometimes be abit dodgy) and Pidley( love the course but like Phil says the membership puts me off)

I might be biased, but I think Brampton is a good deal. Lovely course, could do with better winter tees. Nice little clubhouse and good clubhouse banter. Lots of comps throughout the year.

Yeah people I have spoke to say it is nice. Will try it out when the weather is ok. Do you need to book tee times as a member or can u just turn up and squeeze in? That's one thing I like about st Ives.

SO its between Girton and Meridian... the first two I identified as possible candidates...

Thanks forum, such a big help ;)

I'd still add Bourne into the equation which is minutes from Meridian. I've not played Girton but not overly impressed with the one time I played Meridian which just felt a bit souless really. I have played Bourne a number of times and enjoyed it. I quite like the opening Par 3 as it spreads the play from the outset. It does get wet though and in particular the paths between greens and tees. We are talking Cambs though so yes most courses will suffer in the wet.

If you fancy playing Wyboston let me know although it is already on the damp, soggy side!
