Board Comps - Your Club's Qualifying Rules

I won our club champs this year (best net) but only the best gross got their name on the board

I was overnight leader in ours (nett)... got my name on a dry-wipe board for a day!

Still gave me a huge buzz though... its still a board after all :D

Elitism? I'm not sure where you are getting that. I won't win the club championship and still love being part of my club. I will try and win, but will fall short. Does that take away from my membership experience because my name doesn't go up in gold letters, of course it doesn't.

Golf is the only sport I know where folk can be pretty hopeless but expect to win things. Bizarre.

Looking back at a board from 50 years ago to see a name up countless times. You ask about him only to be told, "he was the best 17 handicapper I have ever seen"

History,, really?

I'm not specifically referring to the Club Championship. Perhaps our messages have got mixed, but I was talking about the assertion that a player can't have his name up on a board for a comp because it is a handicap comp and although he may not have scored the lowest gross in that particular comp, he won net and that is celebrated by putting his or her name on a board.

I don't know what you are talking about regarding your comment about history.

I'll take it a step further than that. Golf is the only sport where you have to put up with hopeless people, taking 14 shots to get out of a bunker, running up an 18 then it coming down to a 6 after the crazy handicap system we use etc. I really fail to see where these people get their enjoyment from.

I have a question but its not different enough to the topic to warrant its own thread

Where clubs restrict boards to just scratch comps do any also have board/s for shooting a Hole In One

I guess a few must which would then seem strange to prioritise a single good shot (often with a thick slice of luck) over an 18 hole handicap comp

Re the thread, I don't believe a names worthy of being on a board if a player has been handed a couple dozen shot head start (doesn't matter that its not the players fault) it over inflates the achievement if you've taken 20 more shots than someone else

Also, I don't believe a names worthy of being on a board if there's realistically only a very small pool of players likely to win (doesn't matter that its not the players fault) it over inflates the achievement if you've only beat 2-3 other lads as the rest never really had a hope

Now where's that fence :D

none of the clubs Ive been a member at or visited up here have any other board than Club Captains and the club champion.

How does that work then?

Stableford Adjustment

Oh so he is actually arguing that because they scored so high and it is adjusted down that is crazy, i.e. discount the ludicrous hole?

Not sure it really matters though. If that adjustment didn't happen people would be screaming how the player deliberately shot an 18 to protect his handicap

It makes no difference when they are hacking it round in 140 and five and a half hours!

If they are "hacking it around" in 140 they won't be winning any comps, let alone getting their name on a board and if they are enjoying themselves, then so be it. Hopefully they won't be playing with miserable people like you who can't seem to see the difference that just because you're not good at something, doesn't mean you won't enjoy it.

And I agree with handicapping, but would rather see the best golf being rewarded for any major comps.

Lowest gross all day long. Thats what golf is all about after all

 So if your clubs +3 or better H/C member wins, that would be ok with you guys playing of scratch or 1,2,3, 4 or 5.:smirk:

I don't see why not, the best golfer wins after all.

Young Sandy won ours this year, he was off +3 at the time beat another guy off +3, one off +1 and +1 in the final. not a bogey in sight on a windy evening off the blue tee, with the greens about as quick as they can be.

On paper you're giving up 7 shots to the +3 guy. How fair is that , I nearly had to wrestle you to get my shot allowance from you
Although i didn't really need them in the end. :D

Its scratch, the better player wins with no shots.

played him the year before and beat him in the scratch knock out, of course he is the better player and should win... but in a scratch comp bragging rights are on offer.... though not when you are giving a load of shots to a 17 handicap;)

Should add a good 17 H/C :smirk:.

Ok put it this way, would you play the +3 guy of bare feet [ not to mention your legs] :smirk: every week for money. He should be giving you 7 shots so , he's a bandit .
