Cheers for the info, my preference was a 3 series, but as a one car family the wife would refuse to drive it, and I ain't willing to get up at 6am on my day off anymore to take her to work!!!

Corsa and Clio are an absolute no-no, far too small.

Last time I looked at the Civic they didn't have great MPG, has that changed?

As and when I change it will be a five door car, not a coupe.

I'm getting an average of 48mpg from our civic. that's a 50/50 mix of motorway and town driving in rush hour traffic through the week and occasional long trips at weekends. I don't drive fast anymore, but i don't drive slow either. It has great overtaking ability and is smooooooth to drive. Only annoying thing about it is the crap speakers, but i'll be replacing them with better units.

You should draw up a shortlist and go test drive some cars. There's a guy who parks next to me at work with a new shape golf GTD. It's beautiful. I know it's only a golf, but depending on what model you get, it makes a big difference to looks. If honda could make a civic with the interior quality of a VW golf, that'd be the perfect (family) car.

We also looked at Seat Alteas as well, but the interiors are cheap to the max.

One other option is a passat estate. lovely inside and more space than you'll ever need.

I have a Leon. Not the orange like in the link above, mine's far less conspicuous in bright yellow!!
I have to take driver and 3-wood out to fit my bag in, even then it has to go in diagonally.
I can fit my leccy trolley in as well, or I'd imagine I could get another set of clubs in instead.

The FR diesel is 170bhp and can get around 50mpg if driven sensibly.
You also get a lot of extras for the money, although you sacrifice a bit of internal build quality (more plasticky than a VW).

Currently got a four year old Picasso, getting 33mpg out of it at best. (1.6 petrol engine)

I do like the Seat Leon, that is one to consider. Golf plus is another.

I too have a Civic, 2.2 turbo diesel model with leather seats. Decent finish inside, spaceship dashboard.

Fuel consumption is in the mid 40s but can be better when I take my time Power is good with impressive acceleration.

Had mine for two years now and the most disappointing thing is the paint finish, very poor, too many stone chips on the bonnet. This is a popular topic on the owners forum as well. Fortunately mine is a company car so will go back next year.

Golf club and trolley fits into boot, but have to take driver out. Overall 8/10

No spare tyre - Slugger have you had any punctures yet ? Great fun, especially when it is windy and thumping down with sleet :( :(

Lol, mid forties! both of our cars together wouldnt add up to anywhere near mid forties!
A guy in work has a diesel accord estate, pretty good power and loads of room for kit in the rear. The dash etc is quite nice and not as cheap as some of hondas previous efforts.

I'm considering an Accord CDTi (saloon). Not exactly exciting, but it would serve the purpose.
I had a petrol Accord coupe (2.2i) for a while which was really rather good but oh so dull.
One day I got up, looked at it on the drive and thought "yuk, it's just so not-sporty"......sold it within 4 days.
The estate is great but wow, it's ugly......

Oh yes, and I owned a year 2000 1.8 for a while - I nearly forgot - that tells it all.

4 Hondas....all brilliant.
8 Toyotas....equally good.
3 Ford, mostly survived, only really like the Puma.
1 BWM, won't have another.
1 Mitsubishi.....probably the best long-term car ever.
2 Vauxhalls....
1 VW (Golf) absolutely shocking....

20 cars in 21 years.......

no punctures for me yet. have heard about stone chip problems, but i only have one on our bonnet from a big massive rock chucked up by a truck on the motorway. :(

I get my clubs in the boot no problem without taking the driver out. In fact, i can get 3 full sets in.

Best thing about the civic as far as packaging goes, is the ability to fold the rear seats up so you have a massive space in behind the front seats if need be.

I know 3 people with the 1 series and every one of them says it is absolute garbage. The only reason they still have them is thehat they are company cars and they cant change them yet.
