I wouldn't be looking at Matfen hall for winter golf
Poor drainage, muddy course in winter.

Best in my opinion, no particular order
Goswick
Newbiggin
Dunstanburgh Castle
Cleveland
Seaton carew
South shields
Even tyneside, locally the best draining inland course I'd say.

Oh, and sharpley.....

The course is in unbelievable condition, considering the rain we've had. 24 hours after the rain has stopped, apart from a bit of water in the bunkers, the course is dry under foot & perfectly playable. We get a lot of visitors during the winter & membership is currently closed.
I wouldn’t say it’s in unbelievable condition, it gets to much hammer in the winter and as a result isn’t in the best condition in the summer.
Still the best layout in the local area by miles but needs work on the bunkers, crying out to be revetted and a set up in keeping with the type of course it is, heathland/links style.

Whitburn is all always in fantastic condition in the summer, gets a bit heavy underfoot in the winter.
