• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Best irons you no longer play.

Titleist Tour Model Forged back in the day were just lovely but they made golf more difficult than it needed to be.

McGregor DoctorX were as ugly as they were good. I won a lot of matches with these irons.

Best clubs I have ever had though are the ones I have now. Callaway X-16 Pro irons with Tour Stiff shafts. Brilliant irons that have never let me down in the last 10 years. I have tried a few sets in that time, especially recently, with a view to replacing them but none have been as good. Not even close in fact. I can't see me changing them for a long time to come. I have won 4 prizes (admittedly 3 on one day!) already with them since mid March so if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Snelly, love that attitude and one I'm hoping to replicate mainly because I can no longer afford to change anything for fear of my marriage going south!

I think joining West Kilbride was a step to far so I'd best tread carefully!

I'd have to say the Maxfli Revolution Black Dot clubs of 1999/2000 were the best clubs I ever played. Got me well into single figures.... ah these were the days :D

Custom fit MP32's. Had to give up my membership due to moving area and not being able to afford membership in Surrey. Was hardly playing so felt keeping blades was a bit much. Sold them for £150.00. A year later finances changed, joined a club and bought some JPXpros.

Much as I like the JPX I do miss the MP's. Such a lovely club.

They should print this thread on the back of new shineys like the health warnings on cigarettes.

The MP-32's seem to be a recurring theme, I kind of regret selling mine 18months ago. But the ones I missed the most were my Greg Norman signature blades from 1994.

+1, still got them but the shaft apparently doesn't suit me so they are in the spares room, they will get re-shafted at some point if not given to the godson The other ones would be the Srixon Pro 100 blades.

We have all done it got rid of a set of irons just to have a change(or had a bad round with them) and regret it.For me Ping I3 blades, blue dot,jz stiff shafts....What a set of clubs they were, now gone:(

Well my starter for ten is to note that I have never done this. Yes I am perhaps unusual but my complete 42yr iron history is as follows - in chronological order:

> mixed bag of hickory shafted and other clubs of various vintage - no two the same maker.
> set second hand early 1970s Macgregor Tourney Split/Step sole
> set second hand early 1980s Wilson Staff Tour Blade Fluid Feel
> set new late-2000s John Letters F-7 irons

And that is it.

Do I miss any of them? Well they were all great at the time. But no.

A Mid-90's set of TopFlite Tour irons as used by Pros like Ronan Rafferty and Peter Baker.
As solid a strike as I've ever experienced.
Saw a set on eBay the other week and nearly got them for nostalgia's sake.....would have set me back 30 quid...

:D it really doesent make sense does it getting rid of a set of irons thinking a newer set will give better performance,I have actually been watching on ebay a set of Ping I3 blades with the spec I had on mine since I started this thread :)

I know I've decided to crack on with mine for a while, they're not everyones cup of tea but I like em :)

The grass is always greener and memories are tinted with the good shots/times you had, bit like the ex GF:smirk:
Just remember there was a good reason for getting rid of them, don't live in regret.:mmm:

With an iron?!?!

Respect!

It was actually lowest gross, past captains salver and overall runner up in a field of 94 at St Georges Hill. Trophies are in my office as I type this! Prizes - Two cases of Fortnum & Mason wine plus a double magnum of St Emilion Grand Cru. All delicious and all gone!

Changing clubs all the time is a mugs game! :)

Titleist 690mb's

Nice clubs they were. Sold 'em when I quit.

Those are some beautiful irons, JO.

My first irons as an adult were my old man's hand-me-down Hogan Apex blades. Wasn't really good enough to use them, so gave them back to my dad when I was given some second hand Yonex cavity backs by a family friend who didn't need them. Ditched them when I bought the AP2's. I love the AP2's and have no intention of changing but I had a go of the Hogan Apex last year and could actually hit them. Must be at least 20 years old but they're still lovely irons.
