Best golf course and experience of a course you have ever had?

Had a wee think about this, I've played and loved a fair few of the top courses in Scotland (Old Course, Carnoustie, Dornoch, Loch Lomond etc.) but don't think I've enjoyed a day as much as when my missus got us a late cancellation to play a mixed open at Nairn for £16 about ten years ago.

We played OK on but ran up a 12 on the 7th (my fault - don't mess with the heather on the left of that hole) and then a nine on the next hole to make sure it wasn't going to be our day - from then on we got sensible and played really well on the back nine. Beautiful course, the couple we were paired with were great company and the clubhouse was welcoming - great day.

This is what a 'non flat' links looks like ;)

Doesn't look much like Muirfield to me :ears:

So what you mean is it has no dunes, of which is does not have many but is far from flat.

Flat means no elevation change, which it has aplenty, i too like Dodger doubt you have played it and just saw it on the TV.

Until the other day i too had only seen it on TV, so was surprised how unflat it is in the flesh.

So...you are calling me a liar?

think what you like , but you came on a post about "Your best Experience" and had a pop at the Muirfield.

There been plenty of other Threads about overrated courses, maybe you should have just stuck it in one of those.

you are ent to not like something but thats not what the thread was about.. now off to specsavers with you;)

As a golf course ?

Thousands of golfers, golf writers, industry experts etc etc disagree with you.

True but Carne is a relatively new course (1990's??) and 000's of miles from anywhere so possibly it slips under the radar a little bit. It's in the same mould as Trump's course which people rave about.

It has got a small bump in the centre of the course, around the 11th and a couple of holes in that vicinity, otherwise flat as the proverbial pancake. Clubhouse welcome was pleasant enough but I was there to play golf not to be sweet talked. I played North Berwick the day after and that was actually a much more enjoyable day.

That 'small bump' goes from the exit from the 3rd to the 4th green across a bit of a gulley, down and up to the tee of the 5th (Primroses being in flower on it being the first sign of Spring) which is all gently uphill. Down and around for the 6th, climb up another hill to the 7th, down and back to the 8th tee, then back onto flat. That same 'small bump' affects 11, 12, 13,14 on the back.

Try carrying an overweight Tour bag around Muirfield (my favourite btw) and you'll remember where the 'small bump. was!

St Andrews, just playing the Old Course is superb, but you also get the buzz of the town. The way you are treated from the starter, marshalls, staff in the clubhouse is just the best I have experienced. Can't wait to go back.

+ a million.

Woodhall Spa for me. Quality place but they also made you feel welcome and it wasn't stuffy in any way.

There have been several but if I had to go for the best, I guess The Kings Course at Gleneagles would be hard to beat. The hotel was fabulous and I played with a PGA Pro on the day, the halfway house, the pro shop and clubhouse - I'm hard pressed to find any fault

In my teens playing Muirfield for the first time with legendary head greenkeeper Shaig Logan MBE.
Beautiful spring evening and we were the only players on the course.
Played really well and was a couple over par when we walked in at 14.

Muirfield is certainly not hilly but then neither are most of the other Open courses. [and North Berwick]

Had a wonderful experience from start to finish when playing the Emirate's in Dubai as you would expect, but the real "kick" was value for money. All for the princely sum of £80 including hire of clubs and buggy.

The pitch and putt course next to Lahinch in Ireland - great fun

Anstruther in howling wind

Loch Leven on a bright sunny day

Killarney in heavy fog

Wentworth on a one time only freebie

I played the old Santa Ponsa course the day after the Majorcan open was held in 1982. Not the best course I've played, but I just couldn't believe the speed of the greens and the pin positions. One of my 3ball was a +3 h/c and he 4putted twice, very scary.
