Best course played & why?

Wife comes from Suffolk and I lived there for a year and visited the relations quite a few times, so was lucky to play a lot of their courses and also Norfolk, never heard a bad word about Hunstanton, played a foursomes event with a mate and one of our partners was chap off z1 handicap who played soccer for Scotland, think his name was Ian Robertson, it was a fantastic day, 36 holes in glorious sunshine, never forget it.
Not been here very long have you? I'll leave it there, my thoughts are well known on here, and with anyone who asks, oh and a commitee member there.

Sorry to hear you have had problems there.....I can only say I never had a problem or many of my Sussex friends when they played there.

Hunstanton is a brilliant course and excellent club

Cf just didn’t like the car park

Lucky enough to have played a number of top courses this year. Really enjoyed Blackmoor for the first time at the H4H day, loved both courses at Sunningdale 2 weeks before the Seniors Open. That stretch on the Old from 3-10 is just glorious wherever you look.

But without a shadow of doubt the best course, best experience, best everything that wasn't score(!) is Royal St. George's. Wow. just phenomenal from the moment I got out of my car, never stopped smiling. the course, the clubhouse, the history. Everything was absolutely fantastic. Coming away from Sunningdale I was chuffed to have done it and been. Coming out of RSG I couldn't wait to go back, and I'm already trying to work out when to do so again!

Thanks for the link the old thread - before I joined, hadn't seen it before - very entertaining.
I note the green fee has gone from £90 to £175 in 6 years.
They don't appear to have a seniors open for £35 or less, so I won't ever be going there.
6th October 2026, seniors individual open - £100 I will be able to keep in my pocket. (Seaton Carew seniors individual open £40 in May 2026)

I've been lucky enough to play some great courses through some of the big GM meets. Too many to choose from but a standout for me would be Castle Stuart.
I would second this, an absolutely fantastic day there. Got to say though, I was spoilt for the weather, it was gorgeous. It also helped that it was a free round.
Two courses in Ireland stand out for me, Carne and Enniscrone. Although am sure there are better over in Ireland. Special shout out to Slab who is currently slumming it in the UK. Mont Choisy in Mauritius was just jaw dropping, and oddly enough another free round.
Mauritius is golfing heaven.

I threw up in that car park in summer! I had a wee bit much to drink the night before… It was a long old day on the links, teed off in pouring rain, must have thrown up 10 times out on the course. Including before and after making an eagle on the 15th (?) par 5.

I can’t say I have fond memories of the place at all but I thought it was a good golf course.

Not to drag this out again, but the wife was with me that day and she agrees 100% with me and you cannot get a better endorsement than a wife agreeing with her husband. 😁

Minchinhampton Old, just the best walk, part of the community, naturally part of the landscape. Challenging and fun but not too demanding. Played it in May with whispey grass along the fairways. Affordable too and a great pub just off 18 to top it off. I second those giving Cleeve Hill a shout out also.

Made me smile as I know what you mean. This is also a course on some people's "worse course on the planet list!"

That's what's great about these lists.

Cleeve Hill - wife nearly hit a sheep with her drive, I kid u not.
Eyemouth, longest hole in Scotland is there. Off whites parred it. Wife got a 7 off whites. Yup whacks it miles.
Pike Fold - Bury area. Risk and reward. I've been there every year for about 7 years now. Utterly brilliant. The 10th is confusing but when you understand what's going on you get the driver out.
Crompton and Royston. Sound proper posh and the course is, but it's in Oldham. Don't let that out you off. I've been there four years on the bounce. It's amazing. A bit confusing around 12/13/14 but awesome.
You can stuff your top 100 courses that GM and others put out. These are the ones you need to play.
Oh and whilst I'm a bottle of wine and five Salford rums deep, I'll add my place. Westwood in Leek. I was there for 8 years and left, for three, but the lure of the place was too strong and I'm bluddy back to suffer the hell of, well the entire course. Every hole is a card wrecker. Not for nothing is is one of the county stars playing here. It's hell but if you manage a score you've done very well. Also top county comps are held here.
Shall I organise a meet? Only my cousin has turned up and smashed it when I've organised anything. Otherwise I've sneaked in with a win, you have to know the course.
Any takers?
