Best course played & why?

How the hell are you expected to tee off with a lion standing next to you??
They give you instructions as to what to do if you are approached by any of the Big Five.

It’s a 9 hole course and after we played it we had a beer then we decided to play another 9, we checked to see if there was anyone on the 1st tee and I remember saying to my wife that it should be ok as there was only a monkey and a crocodile on it.

Not a course that you should go into the bushes to look for it if you lose your ball, but having to shoo warthogs out of the way before you play your shot is great fun.

This is a picture of my wife with the local wildlife in our buggy at Leopard Creek.

Royal County Down

Best course in the world , condition was immaculate, views are stunning , not a single weak hole , welcome was excellent,

For hidden Gem

It’s not really hidden but it’s a Gem

Cleeve Hill

Just great fun
Yep, Played RCD 4 times & it beat me up every time, I loved every minute from the welcome to the final hole.

Tough one to answer I’ve played a lot of top courses. The best and most prestige condition course I’ve ever played is Queenwood everything about the place is first class and something to be experienced imo over and above the other Surrey courses of similar standing but getting to play it is the challenge in the first place.

But if we’re talking courses and how you enjoyed the way they play etc I absolutely love Royal Cinque Ports, the history, the set up and layout I’ve played it on a beautiful summers day and done well, I’ve played it in howling wind and rain where the course beat me up but I genuinely love it every time I play it.

As for hidden Gems or honourable mentions, Maesdu (Llandudno) golf club, wonderful little course, great condition, some testing holes with a mix of parkland and links, plus views all across the Conwy Bay Area it’s a true little hidden gem on a very good budget. Another I’m partial to on fairly regular occasion is Alton Golf club it’s only a 9 hole layout with 2 sets of tees to make it an 18 hole track, really well designed James Braid layout, not long but testing holes with dog legs, slopes and tiny greens which are always in excellent condition, plus views across parts of East Hampshire for under £30 a round it’s a great little place.

Best course for me would be The Kings Course, Gleneagles. It has the lot, scenery, shape, conditioning. You plot your way around it, as you should imo. Every hole is interesting, every one made me smile.

Hidden gem, sad to say that The Hirsel at Coldstream is no longer with us as otherwise that would win the day. I'll throw in West Lothian GC at Linlithgow. Smashing course, always in excellent condition. Lots of really interesting holes. I go every year, have done for the last 5 yrs, and it has never let us down. Never lauded, sexier courses in Scotland than this one, but don't let that put you off.

There are not many courses that I haven't enjoyed when playing them . I really enjoy the highlands though and Dornoch is a real favourite where I've played a few times. fortunately in the days when it was a fair bit cheaper and less crowded. Looking at the prices I'm not sure whether I will play it again.

"Best" is an interesting one, and you're right to ask people to expand on their replies.

I've played four 'top' courses - by that I mean they regularly feature in the UK Top100 lists (Princes, Woodhall Spa, Hollinwell and Sherwood Forest). They were all lovely but they were also very expensive. Expensive places are sometimes full of people who want to show you how much money they have, or pretend they have more than they actually do. Maybe I have a working class chip on my shoulder but I bristle at the prices.

So, I'm choosing my best course based on the 'vibe' on the day, and the memories it created. I'm going to say Tobermory GC on the Isle of Mull. It's nine holes, you pay your green fees in a shop in town, the clubhouse facilities consist of a kettle, a jar of instant coffee, and an honesty box. I went round with my wife (she wasn't playing, just taking photos). We got lost halfway up the first hole. I played terribly with some borrowed clubs that must have been 50 years old. The views over the Sound of Mull were breathtaking and I loved every moment.

It probably wouldn't make the Top100 in the West of Scotland, but for me, on that day, it was my number one.

Yeah.

I’ve played Royal Liverpool but the course didn’t stir my loins like some courses can.

Love Measdu , and the re configuration of the course has definitely improved it . Playing Maesdu & Nefyn next May

Yeah.

That’s both Woodhall Spa courses for me. Played both several times in comp and never once thought that the course was interesting or up to much. Lots of heather and bunkers but always found it quite boring to play. But we’re all different I guess.

I haven’t actually played it under the reconfiguration or at least don’t think I have as it was many years ago. But I remember the views and thoroughly enjoyed every part of the course, would happily go back for a game there.

The 1st is a par3 now and then you cross over the road .

Like lots on here I've been lucky enough to play some great courses, I can never really decide between Royal St Georges, Sunningdale Old and Swinley Forest.

The old course just for the obvious reasons but I’d say Trump Aberdeen just for wow factor.

Royal Dornoch a favourite too, just absolute pristine, a place you enjoy every minute you’re there
