Why wouldn’t I use a club shirt during a Comp ?!? And how does it make me a pleb for wearing it - loads of people wear their club shirts when playing socially or in comps. I have three and wear them regularly
why would you look a pleb just because you have a club shirt on??

i would say 90% of the members at my club would be wearing a club shirt of some sort when playing, and if a jumper or top was required prob one of those too.
lol, ok maybe my bad on that one. I was thinking the same as how you wouldn't wear a band's t-shirt to their own gig. Looking like a bit of a wally for promoting the very place that you're already at. Perhaps it doesn't apply here. I just didn't recall seeing anyone wearing a club shirt in a comp, only when they were in a club match.

It’s a golf shirt. You play golf? You will get use from it and the cost should be irrelevant especially as you will be representing your club. A good golf shirt these days costs £50 easily. Don’t cheap out lad. You may be asked to play in more matches
I've never bought a golf shirt in my life, and certainly wouldn't spend 50 quid on one. I wear polo shirts that I already owned for casual wear also. So Ralph Lauren etc.

As a real Ralph Lauren polo shirt wearer you won’t be unfamiliar with spanking £75 -£100 on a shirt so why worry about one golf shirt when you will get use from it?

as for a band T at a gig, you would in my day..
i don't know what you"kids" wear now, but recall any of the bands i went to see back in the day most of the audience wore one of the bands Tee shirts. I remember going to see the Smiths for the last time back in the 80's for the "Queen is dead Tour" and pretty much every one at it had a Smiths tee shirt on... Even Morrisey;) and The Stone Roses at Ally Pally like wise, though i don't recall what mozza was wearing that day:rofl:

Don't know why it's stuck with me, but I always remember people saying you don't wear a band's own t-shirt to the gig. I have no idea why I've subconsciously applied that to golf as well, just ignore me on that one.

Where's John McEnroe when you need him; YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!!!! I can only take it you don't go to gigs? Loads of people at gigs wear the band's T's; almost a badge of honour to see who has got the oldest one, hence who has been following them the longest.

As for wearing a club shirt & jumper at your home club, why wouldn't you? Shows a degree of pride in the place. Only reason I can think of for not wearing a your own club's shirt home or away is if it is a complete goat track.

Don't worry about wearing the club shirts, that is usually for snooty clubs. Making me laugh with talk of reprimanding if don't wear club clothing on away trips, some of these golf clubs going to be in trouble once this generation of pensioners stop playing

We are not playing football, go in your normal golf clothes, enjoy the day and decide if team golf is for you.

If I was the OP I'd start with the basics. Go back to the club organiser (rather than simply trust your mates word) and see exactly what dress code is expected and what format is being played. Should a club shirt be required, go with the flow. I have my "match" shirt with the club logo on but I'll wear mine regularly. Many of our members where a club shirt even if they aren't in a competition or match

How is playing with a club shirt “for snooty clubs” - what a ridiculous statement. I have played club matches , Scratch matches, mid handicap matches , Daily Mail Foursomes and Mail on Sunday - against various levels of clubs from somewhere like Woburn to pay and play council courses - the only club I remember not wearing a club crested shirt was Woburn , the rest all has club shirts on , some had shirts with Scratch team on them at the local pay and play for example. It’s got nothing to do with what level the club is - we all wear club crested shirts because it’s a team thing and a touch of pride to represent and play well for your club

Right now i see the junior sections all wearing club shirts so think your generation statement is nonsense as well.

My club is far from snooty - but we all wear the club shirt in matches as we want to look smart and take pride in the fact we're representing the club and not looking like Rag-Arse Rovers!!! 😉

Despite our "Royal" title we're as unpretentious as it gets but we simply insist ALL our teams (veterans, ladies, A team and friendly match players) all wear club colours or white club shirts, navy trousers (surely most of us will have a pair of navy trousers you can use) and a navy club jumper. It is a pre-requisite of being in the team. If you think it's snooty then simply don't put your name down to play or accept the invitation. Nothing to do with being pensioners and very jaded and stereotypical reaction. I don't think we play a single match, even the friendly ones against a side that doesn't have their team in a club shirt. These include some elite clubs and some pay and plays so they aren't in the snooty bracket at all

We encourage as many people as possible to get involved in playing in club friendly matches and although most of the players wear a club shirt (because they want to) newbies may prefer to p,at a few matches before they go down the road of buying a club shirt.

PS: I was at the Stones "gig" last Tuesday, and Mick along with thousands of others were wearing the "official" T.

You say that, I was thinking the opposite though. I wouldn't have thought I'll be playing loads of club matches, plus you wouldn't wear your club shirt for a club comp would you as you'd look like a bit of a pleb? So the only use I'd maybe get would be to wear it on friendly knocks at other courses. Not sure though. If I have to buy one, my feeling will depend on how much it is of course. If it's cheap then not going to be too bothered.

why would wearing a polo shirt with a club crest on it make you look like a pleb?

i joined my first club first Jan I have several club polos and tops. Thinking nothing of wearing them on the course as they are smart and decent quality brands.

I would suggest decking yourself out in the five pound bargain bin at sports direct would be more of a crime than supporting your local pro / club.

Nothing 'snooty' or 'pensioner' about wearing team colours or crested shirts.

Really opened a can of worms on this club shirt thing didn't I? Haha, that wasn't my intention, I was just thinking aloud really.

I think/hope this will be nearest the truth, particularly as the club sec hasn't mentioned the wearing of club shirts at all still. I'm hesitant to bring it up myself in case he takes the opportunity to try and flog me a club shirt at some expense, so I'm leaving it in his court for now. :D Maybe I'll ring my mate on the day and make sure we co-ordinate what colours we're wearing.
