Don't agree.
The BBC paid £7m for the Open and it was last shown in 2015

And Sky bought the rights for £75mil

And recently renewed it again for more

In what way are the BBC going to compete against Sky for the rights ?

There is a reason why Terrestrial Telly only have the protected sports

And it’s worth remembering that the R&A were the ones that lobbied the government to remove The Open from cat 1 events just so that they could get the money from Sky

Instead of real outdoor sport on BBC we might have to get used to world championship bake-offs, sewing, dancing, DIY and repair competitions.
Make the most of women's football, rugby, and cricket... for the time being.

BBC's record on global reporting is impressive, but when it comes to climate issues it doesn't want to discuss the cost.

To interview Greta Thunberg it sent a reporter by plane.
On a program about climate change to be aired tonight it sent a reporter by plane.
Plenty of Swedish and Spanish reporters out there speak perfect English.
Once aagin they are wasting our licence fee.

The Premier League Highlights package i believe is the most watched of the regular sporting programs ( outside the major events like World Cup ) - it’s prob more viewers than what those other events will get and other a longer period - I don’t think it’s a case of Prem Lge highlights or other sports
It is, they have a limited sport budget, by spewing it all on a highlights package, they ignore other sports except the ones they can get for absolute buttons, like women's football

And women's football is a prime example of putting it on council tv and folk will take an interest, who bothered with it 10 years ago? But now because the BBC have nothig else to show, a number of people watch it. It's another example of the R&A dropping a huge bollock putting money before exposure, it's basic marketing

The rise in women's football probably has little to do with it being on the BBC. The big rise will have been to do with England's performances in the Euros, and every media outlet paying much more attention to it. On Sky, they reveal breaking news about a big story, I get excited, then find out it is related to women's football. The headline rarely tells you whether it is men or ladies football.

I think people on this forum just cry because the BBC doesn't do golf anymore, and we're in a golfing forum. But golf is just one of many sports. BBC can't cover them all like all fans of those sports want. And, judging by prize money golfers get these days, it seems like there are enough fans to throw their money at them, and keep sponsors happy. The quality of golf coverage on Sky, in my opinion, is miles better than the BBC ever managed, or could manage now.

Reason why the BBC has turned its back on golf, except for Open highlights which suggest golf is little more than a putting competition, is because it wants to promote progamming for a female audience.
It doesn't even have the Masters highlights any more.
But there will be plenty of Masterchef, Celebrity Masterchef, Junior Masterchef, Hairy Bikers etc, etc.

Dancing competion precedes Match of the Day. Men are being gradually excluded from the BBC.
Men need sporting programs for their mental health.

I think we can expect the Football World Cup to be taken away soon and be replaced by highlights.
Meanwhile the BBC executives will award themselves ever bigger bonuses.

As a man who watches most of the programmes that you mention (do not watch junior masterchef) as well as the Sewing bee and a few others and who does not watch Match of the Day, I think you are talking absolute cobblers.

Personally I feel that football is well covered on other channels and the public funding should be used for coverage of sports that are not but I am under no illusion that is it anything to do with discrimination by sex or an attempt to attract an audience on that basis. I can see arguments based on political and social leanings and the image that golf has to the populace as a whole but becuase it does not appeal to women, utter rubbish.

I am not remotely interested in football.
But I'm also aware that it is THE sport of choice for the majority.
And many of those can't afford a Sky/BT Sport subscription.
So it strikes me that as a public service, the BBC really should endeavour to show football.
If by doing so they have to blow a large part of their budget, then so be it. At least they will be pleasing the majority rather than a minority of viewers.

If this was their sole remit then they should just show soaps and reality programme cheaply, happily their remit is wider.

Are women the audience of "Hairy Bikers"!?

If you think cooking programs are aimed at women, you truly do belong in the 1940's, when people felt "women belonged in the kitchen".

Possibly the most chauvinistic comments I've read on these forums. The fact that someone like you is angered / frustrated / unhappy with what the BBC chooses to do actually pleases me. I hope they continue to make you unhappy :)

That is where we disasgree in that it has been argued, and sometimes even agreed with the BBC that, since is ceased to be the sole arbiter of the airwaves, it deserved the unique method of funding that it receives in order to cater for a diverse number of interests without having to worry about viewing figures and commercial success. Assuming that football would be snapped up by another free to air channel if the BBC ditched match of the day, and it would, ITV has done it before, then there is an argument that the money would be better spent helping promote sports which are not well represented on free to air TV.

That is my only reason for arguing against match of the day, I know it means loads to lots of people and it would still exist if not on the BBC.

Just out of curiousity, how did you get your women? Did you just go out
and club them over their head before carrying them back to your cave?

I do hate the cookery programs on BBC.
They are helping to make the nation overweight, and they do not help with the obesity crisis which is becomiing ever more serious.
It has been proved beyond doubt that keeping down the calories to a bare minimum makes you healthier AND helps you live longer.

OK so helping and teaching people to cook properly rather than relying on emminently worse processed foods is a bad thing and also a BBC problem (actually not many mainstream BBC cooking programs these days)
