HID and I both get the new state pension, i believe it's called the universal pension, and cannot claim any pension credits as a result, so will have to pay the licence fee in years to come. I understood from the radio today that there are less than a million pensioners who will still benefit although UK state pensions are amongst the lowest in Europe

German State Pension is over €300 a week. Its earning related, with a potential pension of over €500 per week. Theirs is linked to their version of NI contributions.

I believe there is a social media campaign that has started doing the rounds. In essence they are asking nobody watches any BBC channels on Friday. Right up Missis Ts street that, Emmerdale, Corra and love island 😖

Can we extend that to not using taxpayers money to subsidise rail companies... Branson has trousered 2Bn of taxpayers money over the last decade... Allowing him to live the high life at our expense...
Don’t forget he also sued the Government for not getting awarded Brexit contracts.

How the hell does a privatised company get 2 billion. 😳

Several good advert free radio channels, and a very decent ad free website.

Even if you don't like their TV (and I simply don't buy that there isn't something for everyone with BBC 1, 2, 3 and 4), £12 a month is great value.

If it was optional, £12 just for all the BBC TV & radio channels, I wouldn't pay it. Wouldn't get anywhere near enough use to warrant that.

£80million to move the set of eastenders
They bought 70.000 copies of the Gaurdian ?
According to the news.
The salaries need sorting.
Imo it’s timed to embarrass the government to take action .
All the leadership candidates will be quizzed on this.
The BBC will win either way as the old will pay or the tax payers will pay, win win for beeb.

That’s the problem imo .
Most older people don’t use websites.
The beeb have diversified to much.
It’s supposed to be a tv licence.
Maybe the tv needs separating from the rest when it comes to the licence.

I agree.
My neighbours, a well off couple in their 70s run 3 cars between them and they both have bus passes which they've never used.

The point to remember about bus passes is that they only cost the Council anything when they are actually used.

I must admit if I lived in somewhere with a decent bus service I would actually use mine.

Personally feel the Beeb produce a lot of good content. They are certainly held to a higher standard than other broadcasters.

I also firmly believe there is a place for a public service broadcaster and that the licence fee is as good a way to fund it as any. Ultimately I accept it is a tax as there must be virtually no households that genuinely don't have a TV or Radio.

The beeb do cover a huge number of news items / political events / sporting events on a local and national basis that would simply not be commercially viable for other networks to cover. They undoubtedly enrich the media that is available for consumption in this country, whether you enjoy some or very little of it - there is almost certainly something for everyone.

But - you have to admit the way people consume media has changed and the BBC are adapting to that. We have obviously have seen the move to digital, which has led to a great many more channels with specialist channels for kids, news, gaelic languages etc. and removing this content from the main terrestrial channels. The website is an extremely well run site for current events and sports in particular. The iplayer is also a great resource - much more user friendly than some other streaming apps. And likewise the growing number of podcasts available reflects that people want a deep dive into a subject they are interested in, rather than a magazine radio show covering a range of topics.

In terms of funding I'd be happy for the Beeb to keep the main TV and Radio channels commercial free, with possibly some commercial activity on website / iplayer / podcasts in order to reduce the pressure on the licence fee and deliver better value - especially those least able to afford a TV licence.

I liked one suggestion that the BEEB should run a once a year programme 'Pensioners in Need' hosted by Pudsey Bear's Grandad.
