Played Wilmslow yesterday off The Whites 6600 yards in a Seniors.Great Course. Plenty of rain in last few days and little carry.7/8th Handicap. The guys we were playing with played pretty well off 8 and 5 and as they walked off the 18th said that if they had not had a blob on a late hole they would have had 41 points and thought they may have scraped in the prizes. Not a chance

Yes you have guessed it. There were 2 handicappers playing off 20 and 15 who had , wait for it 47 points.

How can they sleep at night!!!

They are only really bandits if they keep themself in there buffer zone by losing other comps. They well may do so, but if they dont I am sure they had a good days golf and will sleep well. I am a 19 handicap and twice I played to 4 on the front 9 in the summer but have yet to play to my handicap in a comp.

I go back to HTL and I winning off 3/4 handicaps with 46 points. We both put all our cards in for competitions and both have tried to get as low as we could. He had a stellar day and I was there to mop up on the rare occasion he had a bad hole. It can happen.

I agree that bandits are those that "deliberately miss a putt to avoid the buffer or tiny cut. Worse are thoser who clearly play elsewhere all year and do just enough to have an active handicap and then mysteriously appear when the big events arrive and play well and clean up and aren't seen again until presentation night

47s not banditry for that type of comp just a good score,to be a good winner youve got to be a good loser.

oh, me , me, uhhhhhh /pushes his hand high in the air.... I`m getting good at losing!! :o :o :D

I think so much depends on the type of players you're up against. I play with a hot and cold player who goes par/double/par/triple etc. Works for us, as long as we get lucky.

There are no sour grapes here whatsoever. I find it difficult to accept that 60 year old guys can raech 6 greens over 400 yards and score pars when they play off 20 and 15. Not even sure whether they had an active handicap certificate.

Everydog has its day and the best of luck to them

Golf one of those games where every dog has his day. I've played with plenty of guys off high handicaps who one week shoot 45 points in a stableford comp and 20 the next its just one of those things. Played with a guy a couple of years ago off 26 who was one under for the front 9 and had mid 20ish points. didn't hardly score a point on the back 9 though. :D

I know of a few guys who laughed at me for handing 3 cards in when I shot 3 great rounds to get my handicap.
They waited another month before handing in cards. Needless to say they have all been in the top 3 in their restective divisions every other week for most the summer.
Some people are genuine and others just protect themselves.

I also have a friend who is a genuine 28 handicapper but one day in a charity day he played off 3/4 handicap and still came in with 42 points. He played really well. The following day he played off full handicap and shot 25 points. It's just the way the game of golf goes some days :)

Well I take offence at this statement!!

I play in low single figure handicap company every week and whilst I will not keep up with the longest hitters I am in the vanguard of the rest. I AM NO DIFFERENT TO OTHER OVER SIXTIES IN THE CLUB!! 400 yards in two??? A drive and a wee seven iron!!

Whats your problem with over sixties?

A sixty year old is but a boy with silver hair!

Given the OP was playing in a seniors comp and is therefore, presumably over 60 himself, very little I suspect.

Today's 60 year old is not like the 60 year old of 30 years ago certainly.

I played with a mate of mine in the summer in a comp. He used to be off 4, but for a variety of reasons and an injury he had gone up to 8.

The guy is never an 8 handicap, and there have been one or two mutterings that since his injury cleared up (he got two shots back as a result of it), he should have been cut.

Anyway, the comp we teed it up together in fell two weeks before a big board event at our club, and my mate was playing to his handicap by the time we reached the 17th tee. He then missed putts on 17 and 18, both from less than six inches, to miss the buffer by a shot. A bigger example of handicap protection I am yet to witness.

I had never considered him a bandit prior to seeing this with my own eyes, but I have refused to play with him since. I won't play with blatant cheats.

Just got back from a golf holiday with 7 others.

Over the 6 rounds we played, one of the guys averaged about 27 and this included a 46 pointer on the Thursday.

Not a bandit. He just had "one of those days".

In a 4BBB comp with a large field, there will usually be a few pairs with both players having "one of those days" as well.
